Overrated? How? Because he had a bad Blues debut, he's now overrated? The entire Chelsea team were clueless. Liverpool played 5 defenders and were negative in their approach to the game. They didn't come out to attack, they sat back for the major part of the game and tried to hit Chelsea on the break.

I guess Dzeko is overrated too? He's yet to score a PL goal in about 3 games.

Torres is not overrated. He is a top, complete, worldclass striker. His goal return for country may not be very impressive but that's just one of those things. His goal handed Spain her first silverware in 44 years. . . Just ask your captain, Lahm, how good he is.

Angelo Charisteas goal handed Greece their only silverware in hstory therefore we can say Charisteas is a top, complete, worldclass striker.

Torres scored a little over 80 goals in just over 200 appearances with Atletico, how is that bad. He played for them from when he was 16 till he was 23. Save for Messi, how many youngsters have a goal record this impressive? Again, Atletico wasn't so big back then, they only got promoted to the La Liga in '02 and he didn't start out as a top striker.

Well, Torres won't be the first striker to not make it at Chelsea. There was Kezman, Crespo, Shevchenko, Di Santo; they all couldn't make it at Chelsea. Surely, someone has to unearth that calabash buried somewhere by Drogba around the t-junction that leads to Stamford Bridge.

Truth is, he has not been getting supplies. The supplies have been very minimal. I even think there's a gang up against him. Malouda fired at the nearpost when he should have squared for Torres who was free in the box in the game against City.

Besides, Chelsea is a very direct team built around physical and 'mechanical' players. It's not the kind of team where you'll move into space and expect to be picked out by a teammate all the time. You have to do alot of backtracking, running and harrying to survive at Chelsea and Torres isn't used to all that. He has to adapt to the team and once he does, there's no stopping him.

But they both didn't make it at Chelsea and that speaks volumes about the way Chelsea play. Crespo left Chelsea and went on loan to Milan; he led them to CL final in '05 and was 2nd or 3rd highest goalscorer in the CL that season. He returned to Chelsea and still couldn't cut it. Chelsea is a team that defies footballing logic.
Besides, Torres hasn't failed yet. You know how long it took the likes of Benzema, Berbatov, Gomez, to adapt to their current clubs.
The price tag is another factor. Zidane suffered the same problem when he joined Real then for a world record fee. The pressure to justify the price tag can easily put pressure on a player.

Individual awards? He was a member of 09 FIF PRO XI. He was nominated for EPL Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year awards in his first season in the EPL. He was nominated for WPOTY in '08 and finished behind Ronaldo and Messi.

Sheva and Crespo still had some good years in them when they joined Chelsea. Why would Chelsea break the British transfer record for a player in his twilight, does that make any sense? Crespo went to Milan and still performed despite being a flop at Chelsea. He scored 6 goals en route Milan reaching the CL final. Sheva scored 8 goals in 12 in his 2nd season at Chelsea and he was mostly coming in from the bench. He clearly still had goals in him. Even in his present club, Dynamo Kyiv, he's still scoring. He's one of the highest goal scorers in the Europa League. Clearly, the problem is Chelsea.

Chelsea is a useless team. Period.

There's no shame in being outshone by Villa. Even Raul's record looks abysmal in comparison to Villa's.
While Torres began as a supplementary striker to Raul and Morientes, Villa outrightly replaced Raul. There was hardly anytime Raul benched Villa. Villa came into the team when Raul had started to underperform and Morientes had fizzled out and almost instantly became Spain's lead frontman. Torres has 80+ caps for country, about 40 - 45% of those have been as sub. Torres' NT career began when Raul and Morientes were still in-form. In Euro 2004, he only started one game.

You can't rule out the fact that injury played no small part in Torres' no show at the world cup. He didn't start in the s/final, final and Spain's opening game against Switzerland. In the other games he started, there was none he played full 90 minutes.
In every other international tournament he has played in, he has done very well.
Mario Gomez, after finishing as BL top scorer, went to Euro 08 and didnt score a goal.

What was his scoring record before the WC? I can remember before the WC a debate had already ensued about his credentials to start a game for Spain

But Torres has been in such woeful form for Chelsea that his entrance beggared belief. And true enough, he had little to offer in the 45 minutes he was on.

He was slow, his touch was poor, he had no chemistry with his team-mates and despite placing himself in two excellent goalscoring positions, he failed to apply the finish.
