Selective amnesia as always.
We have posted many kenya manufacturing companies.
I think Kenya is easily the third in manufacturing sector after South Africa and Egypt in proper Africa manufacturing.
Morroco and magreb are more linked to Europe.

What you call manufacturing in most of East Africa countries are actually Kenya subsidiaries. A few of our manufacturers like Comcraft/Safal group has expanded globally - in fact most of tin or iron sheet roof in West Africa are Tower Aluminium - part of Comcraft that started and is HQed in Kenya.

IVM/INNOSON are not manufacturing - those are jokers rebadging finished chinese cars.

Like in any sector - Kenya manufacturers are all over East Africa. It's just Dangote like Nigeria.

Let me give you an example; East Africa Breweries - is easily 2nd biggest brewer in Africa after SABMiller. SAB Miller has no hope of entering Kenya or East Africa - while they DOMINATE West Africa and almost run Nigeria.

EABL - operate in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Congo and Rwanda

EABL began with the creation of Kenya Breweries Limited in 1922 – the year we brewed our first ever beer . Today, our business is concentrated on three core markets of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and our products are sold in more than 10 countries in Africa and beyond. We have five production sites across the region and our operations support a range of industries and suppliers.

Current group companies
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) – Nairobi, Kenya- 100% Shareholding -Established in Kenya in 1922. The company's core business is brewing of Beer and bottling of non-alcoholic malt beverages.[8]
Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) – Port Bell, Uganda - 98.2% Shareholding - UBL has been a brewer in Uganda since 1946.[9]
United Distillers Vintners (Kenya) Limited (UDV) – Nairobi, Kenya - 46.32% Shareholding - UDV was established in 1962. UDV Kenya Limited is majority owned by Diageo PLC, which holds 53.68% shares. EABL manages the company on behalf of Diageo. Its core business is the manufacture, marketing and sales of spirit based alcoholic beverages. It also imports and distributes premium spirit brands from the parent company.[10]
International Distillers Uganda Limited (IDU) – Port Bell, Uganda - 100% Shareholding - Acquired in June 2012 from Selviac Nederland, is a subsidiary of Guinness UDV.[11] The company manufactures, markets and sales of spirits in Uganda.
East African Maltings (Kenya) Limited – Nairobi, Kenya - 100% Shareholding - EAML-Kenya plays a vital role of supplying quality brewing raw materials in the form of Malt, Barley and Sorghum to the brewing units of the EABL group in Kenya.
East African Maltings (Uganda) Limited - Kampala, Uganda - 100% Shareholding - EAML-Uganda plays a vital role of supplying quality brewing raw materials in the form of Malt, Barley and Sorghum to the brewing units of the EABL group in Uganda.
EABL International Limited – Nairobi, Kenya - 100% Shareholding - EABLi (formerly EABL Venture) was set up in 2009, the venture's business was to focus on building the Spirits business in Eastern Africa and driving the geographic expansion through greater focus to drive a total beverage business and through expansion into new markets such as The Great Lakes Region. EABLi operates in Southern Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC through third party supply, exports, and covering the spirits portfolio for both domestic and duty-free sales as well as beer sales in the markets where the group does not have local operations.[12]

Bottle of Serengeti Premium Lager
Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) - Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania - 51% Shareholding - SBL is the second largest beer company in Tanzania, with a market share of approximately 28% of the Tanzanian branded beer sector. The company was incorporated in 1988 as Associated Breweries Limited. Its name was changed to Serengeti Breweries Limited in 2002. EABL acquired 51% of the issued share capital of SBL in October 2010.[13]
East African Beverages South Sudan Limited (EABSS) - Juba, South Sudan - 99% Shareholding - EABSS commenced operations in 2013 with the set-up of a depot in Juba from which it would supply beer and spirits to its distributors

Nearly all iron/tin/aluminium sheet roofing you see in Africa - that replaced the grass thatch of before - began as small manufacturing in Mombasa Kenya - plus most of cooking pots and such smiley

The Comcraft group of Companies whose host country is in Kenya is hosted in over 40
countries, with Dr. Manu Chandaria as the Chairman and CEO. It deals in the industry
of mechanical or industrial engineering. Comcraft Kenya Ltd produces steel, plastics,
and aluminium products in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and internationally. It
also manufactures and markets various consumer and building products made from
steel and aluminium. The company was founded in 1915 and is based in Nairobi, Kenya
with additional offices in Singapore, Sydney – Australia, London – The United
Kingdom, Toronto – Canada, Geneva – Switzerland and India (Bloomberg, 2017). In it
are companies like SAFAL Group, Tower Aluminium, Metalex Group among others

They are unequal but they are middle class. Those two are not mutually exclusive. Dont delude yourself. South African primary teacher drives a brand new VW polo car. Nigeria - the whole 210M people - only 32 can manage to buy brand new VW polo in a year. South African do not buy used cars...they buy almost half a million new cars.

Nigerians are daily emigrating to South Africa because it's middle class country. They have serious racial inequality - unemployment - but it still a decent - country by African standards.

Or in few words Nigeria will get to South Africa current level in 2070 if they work really hard. Kenya maybe 2035.

South Africa problem is to get to developed world standard - Europe/South Asian/North American standards - where poverty/unemployment/etc are rare. They are likely to stay in the middle class rut unless ANC decides to take them Zim way to find their base...and re-start again.

Nigerians are more in Cameroon 5 times over than they are in South Africa especially in Limbe where they engage in all forms of spare part businesses with their little shops all around. Emigration is a thing of culture sometimes and not always about poverty because even many educated or enlightened Nigerian Northerners or Middle belters are on average not interested in travelling in comparison to Southern Nigeria, not necessarily because they are richer than Southern Nigerians.

Only an unhinged dum-dum can wake up and argue that South Africa is at same level with Nigeria or Ghana or Kenya.
South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana are at the same level with Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
Those are upper middle income countries or just middle income countries.

Even if it's patriotism - please some things are VERY obvious.

Just aim to get to South Africa level in the next 50yrs (looking unlikely) - Kenya is aiming to get there in 15yrs (very likely). That is ARGUABLE.

Meanwhile South Africa should aim to get to developed world - or high income countries like Mauritius just recently did.

Volkswagen expects higher sales in Rwanda than Nigeria
For its Nigerian market, the company expects to assemble about a 100 cars this year . Volkswagen sold just 40 units last year. Automobile sales took a sharp hit in the last two years due to the recession and depreciation of the Naira which led to a sharp increase in cost prices of cars, especially brand new.

Why Nigeria is playing a smaller role

One would expect that Volkswagen would be more bullish on Nigeria due to its much larger population (over 160 million compared to Rwanda’s 11 million). The East African country, however, fares better on a macroeconomic level.

Real GDP growth for Rwanda is put at 8.2% in 2018 compared to Nigeria’s forecast growth of 2.1%. Real GDP growth is GDP adjusted for inflation. Higher growth means more people are likely to purchase cars.

Volkswagen was founded on the 28th of May 1937 by the German Labour Front. Fondly known as VW, it is the flagship brand of the Volkswagen Group one of the biggest automobile firms by sales in the world. Revenues for the 2017 financial year hit a record high of $264 billion.

See what I'm saying? You are too selective with data. You read one article that says Volkswagen may make it big in Rwanda, and then you conclude that Rwandan economy is doing better than Nigeria? (what an insult). Why not say Volkswagen are not amongst the favourites? When I asked for data, I was asking for wholistic data of all facts and figures concerning the number of cars imported or assembled in Nigeria not projections from Volkswagen on how they think they would do well in Rwanda over Nigeria. I asked for something like this:

The Nigerian market has become the most sought after for car makers on the continent because of its huge market potentials. Sadly, the lack of good road network and low purchasing power caused by the recent economic contraction has impacted negatively on the volume of sales in recent times.
In the past, there were very few established car brands in the country and only a certain class of people were able to afford them.  Over time, a lot has changed as there are now lots of car brands in the Nigerian market, with every individual who earns a decent income left with the opportunity to purchase a car.

On this week’s edition of Product Review, a weekly article where we feature products contending for prominence in Nigeria’s Red Ocean consumer market, we bring to you the various brands in the automobile market and how they are competing for visibility and profitability.

In the past, brands like Peugeot and Volkswagen were among the big players in the Nigerian market. However, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), assemblers of the Peugeot brand in Nigeria, incorporated on December 15, 1972, ran into stormy waters after series of policy somersaults by the Nigerian Government (its major customer) and inadequate tariff protection for local assembly plants.
Laden with a huge debt of ₦30 billion by 2011 and no prospect of a private investor willing to risk his money in turning it around, the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) acquired a controlling 80% shareholding and assumed board and management control in 2012. In 2016, AMCON invited prospective investors to bid for its 80% percent stake in Peugeot Automobile Nigeria.

There are, however, reports that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, may be expanding his business frontier into car assembly business. Recently the Dangote Group was granted a franchise by the Peugeot of France Groupe to construct and operate an assembly plant in Nigeria.
The Volkswagen brand has also been unable to produce that ‘spark’ that made it the brand of choice in the 80s and early 90s. Its famous Beetle model has since died a natural death with the advent of sleek and trendy brands.

In a Twitter poll conducted by Nairametrics, Mercedes Benz got 52%, closely followed by Toyota with 41%, Honda and Kia got 5% and 2% respectively. Regular upgrades, better features, and motor components also make this brand (Mercedes brand) popular among motorists.

Some facts and figures
According to the data released by the NBS last year, Nigeria has a total of 11,547,236 motor vehicles in the country, recording a 0.78% growth from the 11,458,370 vehicle population reported in the first quarter of 2017. This means, a total of 88,886 vehicles were bought between March 2017 and September 2017.
Private vehicle data in the country currently stands at about 4,656,725 or 40.33% of total vehicle population. The data also reveals that Nigeria has a total of 6,749,461 commercial vehicles which is about 58.4% of total vehicle population in the country.
With an estimated population of 193.3 million, the data suggests that the total number of Nigerians available to one vehicle is 16.75. In terms of vehicles per 1000 Nigerians, it comes to about 59.7.

That is arguable debate - but to elevate Nigeria and South Africa at same level - is pure madness.
South Africa on a good year can buy 0.5M new cars.
You can argue like we Kenyans do - that in decade or so - we may get to South Africa level if they get stuck in their current morass
But to argue that Kenya or Nigeria or Ghana are NOW (in year of 2022) at South Africa current level would make you clinically insane.

GeneralDae:

Credit system is not good.
it makes economies live beyond their means, hence faster social development but it creates it own canker.

You're truly behind,
We have had a national ID since forever.
Every SIM in Kenya must be registered.
What we only lack are addresses -
Just40:
Soon after we get our national ID card and Digital address system database and sim registration database to synchronize , which will happen by mid year.

Fortunately for us, our people are ever ready to buy anything they want in a single transaction.

Ghanians please take notes.

It was never even a debate in the first place. Look at what people are building with their tea economies. While with all that gold all you have to offer is a chicken coop of a city. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

We have post office addresses - by Kenya Post Offices Corp - they have offices all over - with your rental box.
What we dont have is addresses in every house or plot.
Like in developed countries....where every house has a little box
In Kenya you will go the nearest post office - your market center - open your box - and close it.
