rvp2018:
Poor Ghana debt exceed GDP.

As a result, public sector debt went from 62% of GDP in 2020 to more than 100% last year. Debt servicing now takes up about 70% of government revenues.

As usual... Seeking attention

Ghana's debt has reduced to 400 billion cedis and GDP has increased to 870 billion cedis. Debt was not the problem of Ghana, last year, currency depreciation was (a sharp Turkey like attack on our currency by Washington)

The debt is less than 50% of our GDP as we speak... Next dream pls

Washington has a huge Trillions of dollars fund to bet against your currency on the forex market and can crush any currency they want...
This is what is happening to the Turkish Lira. They used ESG to do same to the Cedi in the later part of 2022.

You're just stupidly dumb .... When all of it was happening, Ghana's forex was 11 billion dollars
Ghana decided not to intervene untill the last month. Ghana ended 2022 with 8 billion dollars in forex and in February it was 6 billion.

Currently it is back up at 8

Nope that’s not true.

Largest economy is based on GDP output not the value of your currency.

If economy is mentioned by dollars , Nigeria is in 3 rd place , you have already seen dangote drop 4 billion dollars in rich list .

Things I see in this thread can swing from being educative to been stupid.

How can someone argue that if GDP was calculated in USD Nigeria will be 3rd. Was there ever a time GDP calculated in a country's local currency?

I doubt if your tinibu can freely float the currency and do the necessary reforms to attract foreign investments which was unacceptable too low for a huge Nigerian population

There are some reports which were saying about naira being overvalued by a as high as 250%. If naira is floated freely, it might loose value by more than 150%, now imagine how it will affect the GDP figures and inflation, and the pride of being Africa's biggest economy. I don't think the shortsighted folks will accept their ego to die just like that.

Expect a lot of resistance when reforms are being implemented

You are getting it wrong. Naira was devalued in 2016 too. It had minimal impact on GDP. Within a year and as Nigeria got out of recession, value of output in naira terms simply doubled all round to balance out the devaluation. We then got back to around thesame GDP as 2015 before the devaluation and we've been there for a while now.

I understand the logic that devaluation of currency should automatically lead to big fall in GDP but it's not a linear relationship.
Also, naira has already been floated. At the moment, the black market is cheaper than the official rate already.

Black market is 755 naira to a dollar while official is almost 800 naira. So your assertion that they are scared to float freely because of pride is false. Experts say the real value of the naira should even be lower at 600 or 550 when everything settles down.

am not sure how much it was devalued in 2016,and if it was floated at the time.
What we see now issomehow different with the previous devaluations. Currently, they r floating it,and that will lead into massive depreciations unlike the devaluation of the past few years. That's why I said earlier, it will be harder for them to let it float freely
Anyway, time will tell, its too early to make the long term predictions

No nation in the world allows her currency float freely continuously without intervening at some point in time.
Central Bank of Nigeria made it clear they would intervene much later when some backlogs are cleared. For now, naira is still trying to settle.

How long did it last in 2016. What matters is official USD exchange rate at end of 2016. If Buhari chicken out months - GDP remain overstimatd - at least nominal.
