Charging Your Phone Overnight Hurts Your Battery Every Time And Here's Why You S by ememabasiakpan(m): 1:15pm On Sep 08, 2016
If you thought plugging in your phone to charge overnight after complete battery drain from the whole day’s shenanigans was a good idea, think again. Yes, your smartphone is much like yourself, waking you up in the morning, busting ass at work, running miles at the gym and playing games in your free time. But no, it doesn't need to charge itself for 8 hours to be prepared for the next day. Leaving your phone on charge for extended hours is more likely to deteriorate your battery than boost it.
Here’s why: smartphones come preinstalled with Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion type batteries are smart like your smartphone; they charge faster and store a lot of power, helping your phone get through the most demanding of tasks in a day… but… the thing about Lithium-ion batteries is that they have a definitive number of full charges which means that every time your phone battery is charged to 100% it is one step closer to its demise. So, when you leave your phone on charge overnight and wake up to a 100% power indication, your phone battery is actually a notch less efficient than before.
The solution to this? Try to take the phone off charge before sleeping. Also, maintain battery capacity between 20 and 80 percent to trick your phone into believing it still has the same number of full charges left as the first time you bought it.
Another thing about Lithium-ion batteries is that they discharge rapidly at temperatures below -15°C and above 45°C. When you fast charge your phone you supply high electric current to it, which heats up the battery, slowly eating into the long-term battery life. So, if (hypothetically) your phone battery could’ve worked optimally for two years on responsible charging, extended periods of overnight fast charging could cut it short by a half year or more.

Tip: Avoid fast charging your phone overnight like the plague, and if possible, leave fast charge for when you truly need it. Be a responsible phone-izen!
