You know through milestones. Though, there are exceptions. On the average, a baby of 8 months should have started crawl. My baby took his first step at 9months.

yes, Most babies learn to crawl between the ages of 7 months and 10 months.

Except for a girl child that can start walking at 9months

I don't think it's about the sex, babies achieve their milestones differently...irrespective of their sex.
Some are early bloomers, others are late.

Lots of kids around me perfected crawling by/before 8months. Any kid learning to crawl @ 10mths would definitely give the parents concern_ such a kid might be considered a late bloomer.
