It's a known fact that the word 'Wahala' came from Hausa as can be found in the Hausa dictionary-kamus. It means suffering, torture, pain, harshness, difficulty
It was the Hausas through trade and commerce with other major tribes in the country that spread the word and made it become part of the everyday pidgin.

The word is purely Yoruba but can also be traced to Arabic.

grin grin The word is actually Hausa word borrowed by Yorubas and now by everybody in Nigeria. Hausa could have actually borrowed it from Arabic: so it is a case of "borrower borrowing borrow!"
It is in the class of many words borrowed by Yoruba from Hausa who borrowed from Arabs, another example in "alubosa" which is Arabic word "al basa", Hausa also borrowed that from the Arabs.
The only problem now is that we do not know when all these borrowed words will be returned to the owner cheesy cool
