Hope Drives the Economy - Obi

The former Gov. of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has called on NIgerian leaders at all levels to project the positive image of the country at all times. He made this call yesterday while speaking at the Seminar on leadership organized by the Laity of Onitsha Archdiocese at the Shanahan Hall of the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha.

Obi who argued that the economy is driven by hope, said that once investors got negative signals about the economy either due to unrestrained statements or unnecessary name-calling, that it would engender a sense of insecurity and panicky among the people. He said that once the investing public became panicky, they would, in the case of foreigners, withdraw their investments to places the feel as better secured.

Speaking in leadership, the former Governor said that good leaders must have clear visions and must at all times inspire those they led through positive example.

Using his time as the governor of Anambra as an example, Obi said a leader must be ready to take even unpopular decisions, like the decision to return schools to the Church, which, according to him, was the brain behind the successes recorded in education in Anambra State.

Speaking on security, Obi recalled how, through the quality of resilience, required of a leader, his Government was able to reduce crime in Onitsha through the fencing of the barracks at Onitsha and the attraction of Naval base at Odekpe.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Laity Council, Mr. Joe- Martin Ogbuefi said they unanimously decided to invite the former Governor for the lecture because his exceptional performance as Governor has remained a reference point in Nigeria.
