The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has followed in the strides of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as they have likewise given the government notification of industrial action.

As announced by the newly-elected president of the association, Dr. John Onyebueze, after the end ofNARD’s 26th Annual General Meeting which held in Enugu.

NARD had given the government a grace of two weeks for all pending issues in the health sector to be solved else they will embark on strike at the end of the month

The President of the association, Dr. Onyebueze, in addressing the journalist after the meeting said, the present condition of general medicinal services conveyance in the nation was “pitiable”

He said, if things continues to go this way and there seems to be no change by the end of September, 2016, the association cannot guarantee industrial harmony in the sector. Dr Onyebueze listed unpaid salaries as part of the issues plaguing the health sector.

He additionally encouraged the administration to actualize its concurrence with health workers, which included upgrading the infrastructures in teaching hospitals, making pressing move against poliomyelitis and Lassa fever, and the prompt discharge and execution of the report on the residency preparing program.

He also said, “Are you talking about the rickety beds in the accident and emergency wards? We do not even have gloves and emergency tools. We do not have pens to write and make prescriptions. We are saying that this thing must not continue.”

Continuing, Onyebueze said only the implementation of outstanding agreements would forestall an industrial action by resident doctors across the country.

“The Federal Government should expedite action on the release of the bailout funds for the state tertiary health institutions as agreed earlier.

“Centers that are not deducting pension commitments from our members ought to promptly initiate, while all focuses ought to guarantee full settlement of deducted commitments of our members to pension fund administrators.”
