Calabar was the "Capital" of that part or Nigeria that is now known as SS and SE . At that time it was called Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. This was until 1906. When it was merged with the Colony of Lagos and Lagos became the "capital"

It is important to note that this capital status of Calabar was to a large extent "on paper" . Europeans drew the Map in Berlin in 1886 and in Eastern Nigeria the UK gave a "Royal Charter" To the Royal Niger Company which is today Unilever. A large part of the territory was not physically subdued until 1914 and many parts did not see white men before that time.

Calabar is recorded as a "Nigerian Capital" and NOT Capital of Nigeria. In that wise Zungeru also was a "Nigerian Capital" in exactly the same sense
