It does not take a genius to understand the process that led to religious faith. Faith was fine as long as no-one understood the natural processes that drive our universe. To the irrational and ignorant, one explanation is as plausible as another.

That is why those with a higher degree of education, especially in science are less inclined to believe in magic or miracles. They have found a better explanation which is more intellectually satisfying.

No wonder ultra religious fanatics like the Taliban and Boko Haram want to restrict education and deny their followers the ability to question their assertions. Education is the enemy of religions.

Fast forward to 21st century and look at statistics of these religious people. The scientistS of this century have different story to tell. I am aware that religious people found the great institution today because during the renessaince(or the medieval period) in Europe, being irreligious was met with disdain, death. But this last century and now has a different story to tell

Modern science began as a result of dissatisfaction with religion. During the inquisition and the great schism peoples and authorities started the schism, the Church, I mean the Roman church never likedthe birth of that era but they have started embracing it.
People were dissatisfied with religion and they found out you could actually study the natural world without a need for what the priest said. The breakaway churches, I mean the protestants were largely responsible for the enlightenment because of dissatisfaction with religious teaching
