The Watford forward fluffed his lines in a big way against Manchester United on Sunday

While Watford picked up one of their best results since returning to the Premier League in 2015 when they beat Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday, it was a mixed afternoon for Odion Ighalo.

The Nigeria forward found himself faced with an open goal in the 15th minute after United keeper David De Gea spilled the ball at his feel. However, the Super Eagle—without any distraction or pressure—skewed his shot wide.

Ighalo was torn apart on social media for his mis-kick, with some mischievously claiming that his penchant for all things United was behind his mistake.

Others argued that it was one of the worst misses ever seen in the Premier League, while some questioned whether the international hitman can really be considered EPL quality!

While Nigerian social media users also joined in the chiding of the hitman, many of them will remember a miss by one of Ighalo’s compatriots that was every bit as bad—and arguably worse—than the Watford frontman’s unfortunate failure.

Surely the most infamous miss by a Nigerian frontman came in the 2010 World Cup, when poor Yakubu Aiyegbeni missed the target against South Korea despite only being a few yards from the line.


The then-Everton forward had the whole goal at his mercy after being picked out by Ayila Yussuf, but somehow appeared to lose concentration at the crucial moment and nonchalantly finished wide before looking on in disbelief.

In contrast to Watford, however, the Super Eagles weren’t able to move on from Yakubu’s horrors how in front of goal and take all three points…at least Ighalo can thank Etienne Capoue, Juan Zuniga and Troy Deeney to thank as the Hornets eclipsed Manchester United.

According to the commentator on Yakubu's miss "that's the worst miss I have ever seen." I wonder where he got his conclusion

Yakubu's miss was far worse for the following reasons

1) It was in a world cup tournament. You can't compare to a premier league match

2) Had yakubu scored that goal, Nigeria would have advanced to the round of 16 instead of south korea

3) Ighalo played well yesterday besides the miss and watford went ahead to win the game

4) Ighalo was even given a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the game for his contribution

5) More importantly, yakubu missed an open net from 3 yards while ighalo missed from about 18 yards

However, while is goal.com fixated on ighalo's miss while not talk about the chances ibrahimovic gave up or how silly rooney was for the entire 90 minutes

Besides, great players like messi and ronaldo have equally missed better chances so let ighalo rest.

Yakubu's is worse

OP, YAKUBU is a noun which means - anyone who misses a goal or an opportunity.
Yakubu's miss is a reference miss. No other miss is comparable to that.
