Osaze said that the challenge facing the Eagles in their bid to qualify for 2010 World Cup shows that football is fast growing in Africa.

The light skin player, who was voted the Most Valuable Player, MVP, of the clash against the Mambas, noted that the days were gone when the Eagles were super and the dreaded team in African football, and found it easy to qualify for World Cup tournaments.

“This is unfortunate,” he noted, adding, “we, therefore, need to work harder on our preparations to pick one of the African tickets. We have to work on our mentality and commitment to qualify as there are no more underdogs in Africa when it comes to football.

“There are no more easy games. The level of the game in 2009 has shown that we will not get it easy even at the Nations’ Cup.

“You can see that Nigeria is having difficulties in qualifying for the World Cup and that shows that the standard of football is improving in Africa.”

Odemwingie emerged the best male footballer of the year 2009 in an award jointly organised by MTN and AIT yesterday in Abuja.

The awards were given to recognise and appreciate the performance of outstanding footballers, coaches and administrators.

The striker, who dedicated his award to the Eagles, solicited sustained support for the senior national team in their bid to qualify for the World Cup.

He said that more commitment would be needed by the team if they are to overcome the Harambe Stars of Kenya in the last round of game in the qualifier on 14 November, adding that players “who are fortunate to be picked to represent Nigeria at any competition must be patriotic and committed.”

Odemwingie lamented that the Eagles drew 2-2 with the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, when Nigeria needed a win to brighten their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
