Any chance of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to get a referendum of their own has been ruled out by President Muhammadu Buhari. This announcement by the Nigerian president comes barely 24 hours after a stay-at-home protest by the Biafran agitators in the eastern part of the country to express their displeasure with the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration.

The Nigerian president who has just returned back to Nigeria from the United States of America, where he attended the 71st United Nations General Assembly, insisted during a media chat before his departure that the Biafrans are not getting any referendum. The Biafrans are trying to follow the British government’s referendum which all but guaranteed their exit from the European Union with the infamous ‘Brexit’, but President Buhari’s latest announcement may have poured cold water on their aspirations.

According to Sahara Reporters, the leader of the nation noted that the separatists have an option, however, and that is for them to form a formidable political party that will advance their interests in Nigeria’s democratic sphere.

During the media briefing, Buhari also admitted that he had a very successful outing, as he has signed the Paris climate change treaty. He reviewed all his major and side events during the visit and highlighted the issues on which he sent a clear and direct message to the world leaders. In a press statement released by Femi Adesina, the president’s special adviser, he said: “I highlighted the need for the international community to work together to liberate humanity from poverty, save our planet from the devastation of climate change and rid the world of terrorism for a more peaceful and prosperous future.”

President Buhari also stressed that he “mentioned that the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) arising from Boko Haram terrorism is of particular concern to us. “For this reason, we have taken concrete steps to address their humanitarian needs and to ensure that necessary conditions are established to enable the voluntary return of the displaced persons to their homes in safety and dignity.”

I have been observing the way things have taken a turn for the worse since Buhari became president and I have the following advise for him if he will listen to move this nation forward:

1. Buhari should apologise for his 5% speech even if he has to do it in a diplomatic way.

2. He should immediately form an inclusive government; bring qualified people from the eastern axis of this country(i.e SS & SE) into the sensitive parts of government including the oil sector and the military.

3. Find a way of releasing Nnamdi kanu even if it is to arrange a prison break.

4. Take a look at the last confab report, there are many wonderful recommendation there. He may not accept all the recommendations but he could at least implement some.

5. He should personally visit the SE/SS and reassure them that we are all Nigerians and can still work together to make this nation great again.

6. He should make sure that there is a very functional seaport in the SS like Apapa in Lagos and create policies to deliberatly drive traffic to that port. This will greatly impact the economy of the region and will help spread development. Nigeria is too big to rely on Apapa for almost everything, things cannot go on like this.

7. A lot of the tension in the land today is because of struggle for power at the center. We can decide to revert to a regional style of government where your Premier is like your president such that the centre would be considerably weakened and unattractive. All this struggle for who becomes president will cease. Alternatively, we can adopt a system of rotaional presidency recognising the six geopolitical zone structure(experts can work on this and come out with something good).

Nigeria can be united and work again if Buhari can be wise.

Unity should not be a thing of force but persuasion.

Where have you heard people shouting 'One Germany, One Canada or even One Togo?'

Something is wrong somewhere which must be corrected.
