IMO NORTH SENATOR HITS THE GROUND RUNNING, SAYS HE WILL FOCUS MORE ON AGRICULTURE, YOUTH AND WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

The distinguished senator for Imo North Senatorial district, Rt. Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu, yesterday said his administration will focus more on agriculture, youth and women empowerment, stating that he will use his period in the senate to empower and encourage more women and youths from his constituency to be self reliant through youth and women empowerment programs.

This is even as he said he recognised the hidden creative potential of the youth, especially in entrepreneurship, which he said, must be appreciated and harnessed to end poverty and idleness amongst youths, while reducing unemployment.

The newly inaugurated senator who spoke to National Assembly correspondents in his office shortly after he made a strong case for the straightening of existing laws on lynching, mob action and extrajudicial killings, during yesterday's plenary session, maintained that issues relating to youth development , women empowerments and agriculture will be his topmost priorities while he serves as a member of the current 8th Senate of the federal Republic of Nigeria.

The former speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly who disclosed his readiness to partner with relevant stakeholders and government agencies to roll out agricultural programs that can attract youth to agriculture, said his target was to make Okigwe zone the food basket of the southeast before his tenure expires in 2019, as well as, create more than 200 young entrepreneurial farmers for the region, who will become the engine in transforming Nigeria's agriculture in the future.

The senator insisted that 78 percent of fertile land that would feed the regions surging population, as well as, boost rice, cucumber and casava production in the southeast due to endowed natural irrational facilities is in Okigwe zone. He said if okigwe zone would be used to save the southeast and the country from hunger, there was the need to improve on the use of land and embark on agriculture in a way that will interest the youth.

He said his representation also recognised the value of education in preparing the youth for the future, hence his decision to work for the development of the educational sector of Okigwe zone by insisting that a state of emergency be declared on Okigwe zonal educational institutions and other educationally disadvantaged areas.

He expressed optimism that his inauguration into the 8th Senate, despite months of absence of his Senatorial district, will write the wrongs of the past and usher in a new deal for the people of the Imo north senatorial district and Ndi Igbo.
