Opinion: Why Most Government Workers Should Be Sacked! by WebGuy: 3:38pm On Oct 10, 2016 |
The Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) recently released that Nigeria has a total number of 89,226 federal civil servants. This does not include several hundreds of thousands of state government civil servants across the thirty-six states of Nigeria. This is quite alarming especially considering the enormous disparity between this large number and the amount of productivity and effectiveness in the public service. Millions of public funds are wasted on salaries of workers, whose contributions are very minimal to the improvement of the economy. Visit any government parastatal office and you’ll see my point. Government jobs are haphazardly handled or simply left undone. Who cares? At the end of the month, they are bound to receive their salaries or threaten with strike actions, should the government default in any way. Except for a few ones with a keen sense of responsibility, most government workers have this carefree attitude towards work. You often see them in their offices gossiping, sleeping, eating, abusing customers and doing all sorts except the work they are paid to do. Apart from work, some of them take life with levity. Their job security has given them a false sense of security about life. In my opinion, the government should take drastic actions against this public indiscipline. A system should be set up to monitor and measure the productivity of the workers and disciplinary measures should be put in place to deal with the unscrupulous ones. Recently, Governor Fayose of Ekiti State, punished several state government workers for late coming by asking them to kneel on the road in front of their building ( as seen in the featured image). For a governor that is usually criticised for his various policies and slanderous words, people actually supported his decision, agreeing the punishment was necessary for their behaviour. There are several thousands of Nigerians in need of a stable job, some of them work like elephants and get underpaid yet a group of people pride themselves in securing a good job but have nothing to show for it in productivity simply because they are doing a government job. This lackadaisical behavior is unacceptable in the private sector. Here, you work for what you earn, even more. We’ve been talking about cutting down expenses and conserving public funds to awaken the economy I think retrenching lazy, unproductive government workers is a good step.
