Why Is Student's Loan Not Obtainable In Nigeria? by Goddys(m): 8:53pm On Oct 10, 2016
I sat in deep thought with many things running through my mind trying to grapple the reason why things and state of affairs are 'specially' harder in Nigeria.

One of the things my mind was ruminating on was the absence of Student loan in Nigeria financial institutions to help students who are financially handicapped. I have read on the internet, magazines and other publications where it was highlighted on the availability of such loans to students in other climes.

It is glaring that Nigeria government is not doing enough when it comes to its responsibility towards education sector and this can be seen in the light of the above position. A society that does not value education is no better than a barbaric society of neanderthal era. Thus the need for revolution in Nigeria education sector.

Giving the student outright scholarship should rather be encourage that student loan. Student loan are normally obtainable in countries with vibrant economy, which automatically translate to a high employment prospect after graduation. Where person wan see work for 9ja to pay back the loan. The fact is that the rate of defaulter will be very high.

In conclusion, such scheme should will not be viable in nigeria and as such should not be encourage.

You hardly find student in nigeria tertiary institution on scholarships or been awarded grant for research purpose, I think that should be encourage.

It's simple.. Nigeria has no database and central information on each of its citizens. No death and birth records. The government do not have the central database of every student in the country. If they make the mistake of giving out student loans, trust Nigerians, they will disappear with the money and there's no record to trace the defaulters and no means of recouping the loan back. So until the government work on a central database to store records of all Nigerians, student loan will not happen in Nigeria.

veekid:
Because our lawmakers are wicked

Persin wey wan resemble Jesus Christ our Lord dey feed 5000, feed school children meals @school never still get support?! Whu wan support Student Loans & Grants, na you?! Hehehehehawhawhaw...i laugh in french... grin

Sorry, nor be you I dey laff but you're right and there're also too many odds set against it wey pass our leaders' wickedness sef.

See

N0 1. Dey don reason am say "how u wan take pay back?'
Our borders, polity & social security system's too porous neither is it bundled with our national financial/Identification systems. So, what's to prevent you from defaulting?!
This one wey boys don dey go sleep for Sri Lankan embassy, what's to stop you from decamping to Gabon after incurring student loan here?!
Besides, where are the jobs or entrepreneurial Business Support systems to aid your start-up dreams and crafts.

N0 2. Our Schools & Institutions sef are not enough, not well funded/equipped nor well managed.
Many of the policy makers are still busy arguing "Chicken & Egg" theories right now on the issue. Many would rather support the building of more higher institutions rather than sinking Billions into an educational loans system.

N0 3. Our educational system itself lacks inspiration right from its base level to its terminal points.
We've refused till date to accept that this system is not entirely suited to us. We need something else, something more to grow us faster, deeper and richer as a nation. The Naija spirit is fast dying.
These senators know it and lack the faith, the guts to fight it. They shy away from asking the hard questions and making massive policy shifts that would revolutionize our current educational yields.

No 4. Our Policy Makers are confused tea-drinkers amd gworo-chewwers; dey need training in basic critical reasoning.
Whilst, many of them are still stuck on JAMB/NECO/Post-UTME issues none of them are asking the big questions to change the prevailing paradigms.
Imagine, up till now, we still can't make up our minds abt what we wanna do wiv the HND/BSc Dichotomy fracas or how to structure our educational service delivery system in a Results-oriented way that will assist our current level of development as a nation.
Graduating hundreds of thousands of Business Studies, Literature In Eng majors annually. They lack hard skills in crafts, handwork etc and still did a lot of GES-courses that's not translatable to anything useful on-the-go, Isn't that a no-brainer!
When you see BSc Engr grads outsourcing their Final projects on simple circuits and electronics devices to dirty roadside electricians, your laffta will change to an hyena's howl. Everybody coming to clamor for low-paying FCSC, NSCDC, NPF jobs, how did we get ourselves into this mess as a nation?!

No 5. No favorable Legislation to support such moves because our Senators truly are a distracted, heartless and ungrateful lot.
I watched with keen interest almost 3 years ago when Senator GbajaBiamila sponsored a comprehensive and well-crafted value-loaded Bill on the same issue. It was seconded vociferously and passionately by one light-skinned beautiful Senator-Mrs with very nice American-accent like that.(forgive me, i couldn't pick her name, i ws too sold on her flows, looks and envying her husband! cool)
What did the others do?
They didn't deny at all. They acknowledged having the best of educational opportunities Nigeria could have provided.
Many of these pot-bellied Senators literally reminisced on the "good old days" (#GodPunitchDem grin!) speaking of good hostels with porters&carriers wink, meal tickets/luncheon vouchers statutorily provided kiss, Aluta Demonstrations because of Reduced Chicken Wings on their meals shocked, jobs awaiting after graduation with apartments plus Igala/Volkswagen/Peugeot vehicle-keys waiting after completing their schooling on this same much disputed Student Grants & Educational Loans angry!
Well, they paid lip service to the Bill.
Then, they commenced punching all manner of procedural and logistical holes in the Bill like Spartacus meets Ben10 embarassed. And after some resistance from the sponsors, they agreed on further discussions on the matter.
Of course, the Bill has died there since then.

No 6. This may be a minor one but it matters a lot. Most of our leaders don't buy all that #BuyNigeria rhetoric when it comes to their healthcare, wives' deliveries, money management, loot-investments undecided & of course, children's education; they "Eat-Out" grin grin!
It's hard for them to worry hard about your own schooling then lipsrsealed.
No hard feelings, "they simply cared about your votes, not you"! grin

No 7. There is no proper framework for Private Sector Participation and other educational services and products facilitators in place; and nobody is talking about it.
Oyinbos have countless institutional Scholarship/Grants Awarding Bodies. Research students nor dey suffer, me sef still dey find free Research MSc sef and hope dey high wella.
But here?! Only the rich still get all those DiamondBank, SkyeBank Student packages. Banks have never been smiling, dey nor get joy, leaving stranded students to either turn barbers, shoemakers, hairdressers while many have decamped to the ranks of our high-flying OLC caucus.
In case you nor know OLC stands for "Olosho Ladies Congress".
Some of those difficult girls forming hard Sister Mary/Hajia Maimunat na Card-carrying member all of dem be and na dis same old men been dey service dem where you no get chance with you fyneface, 6Packs &Jim Iyke Swagga! Whu ur 6pack epp grin, abeg drop ur dumbbells go chop?

No 8. Many Governors & Senators selfishly deprive their polity based on ego etc.
Not only do we lack continuity in governance, we also lack value-oriented servant-leaders who know that they were voted into office to transition the people from one progressive level to another.
Even when private sector investors approach them with incentives, they often scuttle such moves based on varied sadistic motives.
These may range from ego to political favoritism where they were actually scheming to give your project idea to their caucus member who may even eventually collect money and abandon tools onsite. Some dont want others to "claim the glory", they tell you they've "earmarked" resources for it, they tell you they're "working assiduously to make it a feasible reality" but they never get round to it till their administration winds up and the people lose out ultimately.
Case in point:

Was once part of an educational resources group. And in this particular case, we approached the Ogun State Govt with a PPP MoU seeking to creatively plug certain loopholes in the State's Educational Value-Chain which would yield scholarship/study funding CTCS, Computer Science/ Engr Dept Computer &Electronics Labs.equipping, On-Campus Students' Accomodation / Residence Halls for their MAPOLY on Build, Manage & Deliver basis after invested funds and profit is recouped over some years etc
What happened?
Despite the Rector & School Mgt's salivation at the prospect and all our runnings at the Education Ministry, His Excellency, the Exec. Guvnor stalled, and stalled and stalled till we got wind that as soon as we tipped them off with our proposal.
It appears of their Party stalwarts started hankering to execute it, no doubt as a means of stashing his own stolen loot. They never got round to it till their two-terms ended.
The Schools situation remained largely the same.
Now, what would you say to that?

No 9. Our Non-representative system off governance itself doesn't help matters?
With all the online polls and offline activism; all the students congresses, symposiums and referendums; government and the policy implementation bodies nearly never make use of input from students, parents, the press or other such sensitive stakeholders of the education sector.
School managements have adopted this highhandedness because most of the Academia's eggheads despite protesting against such methods in their upcoming-days in the bygone military eras; they are worse at using Gestapo-style Brute Force on silencing student's activism which is a vital source of feedback in the educational sector.
When your VC sees he can't do that, they opt for SUG "Divide & Rule"?
That's why our certificates are not worth more than tissue paper abroad. It's not so done in the UK or US. A single student's complaints rightly channeled would lead to so many inquiries, resignations and positive policy changes.
Here, students are treated like poultry yet, are they not supposed to be the around which all other variables in the education sector revolves.
No, #NotInMyCountry. Students are herded like goats, beaten by mere gate-men (Madonna University), over-packed into dungeon-style hovels and no one wants to hear a squeak from them (Unilag), ehn?
So, is it now right to fool ourselves that our policy makers are working with all the facts? Noooooooooo!
Until government starts actively working with student bodies or at least recognize and respond to their inputs (South Africa/ Kenya etc) on fashioning their higher-education development and academic policies, they should just shut-up about all the Giant of Africa nonsense they're spouting everywhere.
#NigerianStudentsHavePotential; we want to raise leaders, yet we shackle, muzzle and kick them underfoot every chance we get? They would most likely grow up to devour us! The government needs to wake up, and fast too!

NB
Sorry abt d long post but the plight of everyday-student and educational prospects of children of the common-man is an issue am passionate abt; abeg call Tosyne2much too render it in his usual unique style undecided

We do not have an effective database. Kenyan government give loans for higher education to their citizens and since one get a national ID card at 18. They can trace anyone no matter where they are in this world. You can't be owing student loan and be applying to register a car on their ecitizen platform once the debtor Keys in his/her ID on the portal, the loan board is notified! cheesy cheesy cheesy

One is expected to start repaying after one year of graduation and failure to service the loan attracts $50 monthly fine!

Good question but it's the Nigerian govt nah. They are still owing lecturers. Lautech has been on strike some June. Imagine that.

Until we have transparency and accountability in this country all this loans you're asking for nah still dream and let's even imagine you get student loan. Are you guaranteed employment after graduation to payback your loans?

Student loan is a good plan but at this moment with all our politicians both APC and PDP members intent to bleed this country dry my people student loan is not feasible for the govt
