Ngozi Adichie: Beyoncé's feminism isn't my feminism

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on the use of her TED talk in Beyoncé's ****Flawless

Award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has commented for the first time on Beyoncé's feminism. The singer used fragments of the famous feminists speech in her song ****Flawless, but 'her type of feminism is not mine, as it is the kind that gives quite a lot of space to the necessity of men', says Ngozi Adichie in an interview with de Volkskrant.

It was perhaps one of the most remarkable and unexpected connections in recent pop culture: world-famous star Beyoncé's (35) 'coming out' as a feminist in her 2013 song ****Flawless, in which she used excerpts from the TED talk We should all be feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (39), author of prize-winning books such as Half a Yellow Sun (about the war in Biafra) and Americanah (about a Nigerian immigrant woman in the United States).

In the months following the release of the song the big question was: what did Adichie, whose novel Americanah markedly climbed on the bestseller lists, actually think of this collaboration? This remained unclear, as in later interviews with the writer Beyoncé was hardly mentioned, and if she was, it only solicited a benign smile or 'no comment'.

And, because that's how it goes with big stars, then the online speculations started: Was there a controversy? Was Adichie unhappy with the unexpected publicity for her novel Americanah? Was she in contact with Beyoncé, or wasn't she? Did her image suffer from being associated with Beyoncé's sexually charged clips? Adichie kept silent. Until now.

I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and I refuse to perform in this charade that is now apparently expected of me

In an interview with de Volkskrant about the upcoming Dutch translation of her TED talk We should all be feminists - meanwhile published as an essay - and her presence at the Brainwash Festival in Amsterdam in October 2016, she explains herself for the first time:

'In the first place: of course Beyoncé asked permission to use my texts, and I did give her permission. I think she's lovely and I am convinced that she has nothing but the best intentions. In addition, Beyoncé is a celebrity of the first order and with this song she has reached many people who would otherwise probably never have heard the word feminism, let alone gone out and buy my essay.'

'But I was shocked about how many requests for an interview I received when that song was released. Literally every major newspaper in the world wanted to speak with me about Beyoncé. I felt such a resentment (laughs loudly). I thought: are books really that unimportant to you? Another thing I hated was that I read everywhere: now people finally know her, thanks to Beyoncé, or: she must be very grateful. I found that disappointing. I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and I refuse to perform in this charade that is now apparently expected of me: "Thanks to Beyoncé, my life will never be the same again." That's why it didn't speak about it much.'

We women should spend about 20 per cent of our time on men but otherwise we should also be talking about our own stuff

Beyoncé was applauded for her 'coming out' as a feminist, but she also received a lot of criticism, such as that she was only embracing feminism for commercial reasons and that her sexy outfits and shallow lyrics were incompatible with feminist ideas. Adichie has this to say:

'Her style is not my style, but I do find it interesting that she takes a stand in political and social issues, since a few years. She portrays a woman who is in charge of her own destiny, who does her own thing, and she has girl power. I am very taken with that.'

'Still, her type of feminism is not mine, as it is the kind that, at the same time, gives quite a lot of space to the necessity of men. I think men are lovely, but I don't think that women should relate everything they do to men: did he hurt me, do I forgive him, did he put a ring on my finger? We women are so conditioned to relate everything to men. Put a group of women together and the conversation will eventually be about men. Put a group of men together and they will not talk about women at all, they will just talk about their own stuff. We women should spend about 20 per cent of our time on men, because it's fun, but otherwise we should also be talking about our own stuff.'

“I think men are lovely, but I don’t think that women should relate everything they do to men: did he hurt me, do I forgive him, did he put a ring on my finger? We women are so conditioned to relate everything to men.
“Put a group of women together and the conversation will eventually be about men. Put a group of men together and they will not talk about women at all, they will just talk about their own stuff.
“We women should spend about 20% of our time on men, because it’s fun, but otherwise we should also be talking about our own stuff,” she added.
I think Chimamanda got it wrong here though Why did she have to express disappointment if any? And she finally alluded to the fact she had lots of interviews after the song hit the market. Isn't that contradictory already?

To be fair, I was proud of her when I heard the song and it is one of the few Beyonce songs I personally downloaded cos of the Chimamanda Factor
She would have kept quiet and let it slide cos hate it or love it Beyonce helped her career in no small measure and not the other way round.

And what is the talk about women though! Even the spelling of woman had MAN in it, what did she expect they talk about!

Feminism trash!

This our lady should learn to ignore some assertions. Most humans are experts when it comes to finding 'reasons' to explain the successes of others. If they don't see themselves as responsible, they will see others and other factors. One must allow them to assume. One thing I'm so sure about, I've known this lady's achievements for long, it just now I'm even reading about her whatever with that singer.

Everyone with her own definition of feminism.

Some nairaland girls definition na nonsense finally. They think women should be the head of the home and their husband should cook for them but finally God dey wait for dem with KOBOKO after their husbands don divorce dem finish.

Imagine a married woman coming back home at 10pm with the family hungry.
