Abuja is among and is in the north. But i wonder why they cannot have private universities in states around Abuja like kaduna, plateau, niger and nasarawa state??

They should. Im not saying that they shouldn't

new ones should also toll that line. Another option is diversify the post secondary school education. We should have Polytechnics, Vocational schools, Trade schools and Technical schools.

I agree. Going to university should not be the only option. Imagine what could be done if our mechanics and plumbers etc had profession training and certificates.

I really blame my Father for not looting the treasury and opening a private university when he had opportunity. He was just to 'honest to join others in part taking in cutting of the national cake'

He if had played his game well; Nigeria would have being hearing of My family owned private uni.

Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by diasporian: 8:48pm On Oct 22, 2009
these are private universities for god's sake- all these arguments as if it is government establishing them? do you know the meaning of private at all? it is by individuals and for individuals. if none is in the north, what has that got to do with anyone?
Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by OAM4J: 8:48pm On Oct 22, 2009
Those complaining there is none in the north should get the fact clearly, these are private universities, owned by private citizen. Why should any business minded person invest in building a university where majority of the people don’t like western education or where any little religion provocation will lead to killing and burning. The north might need a private Islamic University sa, I guess that will sell.

honeric01:

so what should be built in the north? mosque and barracks can't you see that lack of education in the north is drawing the whole country back? they have the highest numbers of people in our government with or without credentials, so don't you think schools are needed there?

build mosques, Islamic schools anything that has to do with Islam. any other won't work believe me i know what I'm saying any slight provocation in the north leads to burning of this schools and chaos

Are you insinuating that Nigerians are not entrepreneurial ?

Never made such an insinuation. I was giving a suggestion for other posters who complained about lack of jobs for private university graduates.
Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by Princek12(m): 10:41pm On Oct 22, 2009
The quantity of the universities is not the issue; it is the quality. I think the curriculum should be overhauled, particularly at the graduate level and at professional schools. Instead of focusing on memorizing the doctrines and disgorging it on exam day, the curriculum should be overhauled to focus on critical thinking, more real-world application, and entrepreneurship, all of which are integral in developing graduates who will create jobs and change laws and be more productive instead of looking for jobs.

Well said. But what is it with Nigerians and entrepreneurship ? If you ask me, Nigerians are very entrepreneurial,
Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by PastorOla1: 10:52pm On Oct 22, 2009
this is showing where the intrest of each part of our country is. the north does not invest in anything that will not bring quick and fast return. This is not buying and selling. after all this somebody will be talking FEDERAL CHARACTER, TRYING TO CREATE EQUALITY AMONG THE UNEQUAL.

By entrepreneurship I mean creating world-class multinational companies that can compete in a global environment, not just selling spare-parts or importing tokunbo items to sell in Alaba market or selling mobile phones, or to sell Ghana-Bread in a traffic jam, and so on, nor do I mean staying up all night at a Cyber Cafe with the intent of scamming unwitting citizens. Look at a lot of U.S. businesses.

I was also going to add - private universities could also place emphasis on entrepreneurship with relevant classes and such. You don't have to major in business to get that. In honest, the more graduates open private practices  - in business, journalism, accounting, education, catering, etc - the better for everyone.

You said exactly what I was thinking!! I think the curriculum has to change somewhat, such that those that have the courage would dare to take a leap right out of college straight into business!!
There are so many problems in Nigeria and these problems are huge opportunities for entrepreneurs to take on.
Its those entrepreneurs that would create the jobs for the rest of the populace.

POSAKOSA1:

Well said. But what is it with Nigerians and entrepreneurship ? If you ask me, Nigerians are very entrepreneurial,
It is true. Nigerians have entrepreneurial qualities. But most of the entrepreneurial energy is usually geared towards buying and selling(commerce) as against creating of solutions to existing problems. Nigerians lack innovation, creativity and out-of-the box thinking. What we have is determination, tenacity and gusto!
In essence we have one half of the required entrepreneurial qualities and lack the other half. We need the full bleed and that's what the curriculum of these  these private universities should aim to achieve.

@Northern Universities.

I think Northern leaders have to take this lethargic attitude towards education seriously. Reason been that in the nearest future, the disparity btw the human resource in the north and that in the south would be so wide that we would practically have two countries in one.
Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by msb247(m): 2:26am On Oct 23, 2009

[b]I highly disagree.
Nigerians DO NOT lack innovation, creativity and out of the box thinking.

Examine Nigeria in context.

I agree we need more universities but do the new unis meet the criteria of our needs

-affordable
-quality
-non segmentarian
-sustainability

I am also hoping they can find a way to ensure they do not end up with strikes down the road cos i know the govt unis did not start out thinking of going on strike every 3months
Re: Nigeria Gets Seven New Private Universities by DisGuy: 8:05am On Oct 23, 2009

no one has said the noth does not deserve private unis'
but if you you had the opportunity, given the present circumstances, will u send your kid to school in the north?

knowing for the next four years, anything might erupt.

have u noticed how northeners are quick to kill southerners or the others in the name of religious crisis.?

also knowing that they have a high density of students from other parts of the country outside the nothern tribe concentrated in a place, then we can no longer be certain of our families schooling there cos that would be thier next target point.

until the north can be sensitized about the need for education, i will not site an evening school there as an investor.

afterall they have the numbers when it comes to consumption rate.

they need to be sensitised.
