In his latest and commendable move to build on the bridge of peaceful and productive relationships across the entire Anambra State and its stakeholders, Governor Willie Obiano has, again, extended the proverbial olive branch to his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi.

Obiano who, in August this year, publicly embraced and fraternally apologized to Obi for any infractions and disagreement has, today Sunday October 16, 2016 instructed his media team “to desist from responding to or initiating any attacks against the person of my brother, friend and predecessor in office, former Governor Peter Obi.”

Chief Obiano, a banker, also instructed his team “to direct all its energy and creativity towards drawing attention to the numerous achievements of our two-and-a-half-year old administration in the state.”

The governor who is widely applauded for showing a great promise within a short period in office also reaffirmed his “commitment to changing the story of Anambra State. Therefore, it would be counterproductive to waste energy in answering every negative report that is intended to distract me from work.”

Since he took over from former Governor Obi in March 2014, Governor Obiano has made commendable efforts to build on the foundation he inherited from his predecessors; stamping out violent crime in the state, changing the landscape of Awka the state capital with quality roads and bridges, doubling the state’s internally generated revenue, uplifting the condition of workers with a raise in salary that defies recession and rebuilding the social fabric of Anambra State.

When the guns fell silent at the end of the Biafran War, South East Nigeria was a pile of rubble caking in the sun. Despair hung in the air and people inhaled it and heaved a sigh of relief at the strangeness of peace. War and naked ugliness had become familiar.

Those who could not live with the privations, the dispossessions and the stripping away of dignity! To face the reality of defeat and loss of honour, some people needed a new identity. So, names were changed. Identities altered. Yet there were some who chose a path that had neither guile nor honour; those who picked up weapons and wended their way to the crossroads by the Niger. Welcome to Upper Iweka. The erstwhile capital of crime in South East Nigeria!

And so, for four decades, Upper Iweka was a sad reminder of Africa’s most savage war. A theater for the criminal use of the arms left behind by retreating soldiers. The baggage of violent crime and increasing individuation of its residents stood in the way of the likelihood of any big banging commercial explosion in Onitsha. In fact, at a point, it was common place for people to look the other way while someone was being robbed in the city.
