CBN Moves To Return ETB To Adenuga by wholex(m): 9:19am On Oct 23, 2009
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to return Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. to the Board of the Equitorial Trust Bank (ETB), THISDAY has learnt.

The newspaper was informed that the CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was inclined to return Adenuga to the Board following the concrete steps taken thus far by Adenuga to shore up the capital base of ETB with the injection of an initial capital of $150 million.

A CBN official told THISDAY that since no criminal activity, such as insider lending and money laundering, was found against Adenuga during the special audit of banks operating in the country, “the most plausible step to take now is to reinstate him as a non-executive director of ETB and guide the bank in resolving any observed issues”.

Sanusi, THISDAY learnt, has consulted widely with the CBN Committee of Governors, comprising the governor and his deputies, as well as the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), over the development.

Unlike other troubled banks in which serious infractions bordering on criminal activities were discovered, ETB was said to have been affected by the last CBN action mainly because of the ownership structure.

The CBN had on October 2 sacked the Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Ike Oraekwuotu, and removed Adenuga as a non-executive director after a special audit of the remaining 14 banks.

In the build-up to the resolution of the ETB issue, the CBN also met with Adenuga and other shareholders of the bank and endorsed their offer to re-capitalise the ETB with an initial injection of $150 million.

“Adenuga’s offer is positive and since he was not found to have been involved in any criminal infraction, we decided to resolve the issue as quickly and smoothly as possible without compromising on audit,” a highly placed CBN official said.

THISDAY checks revealed that while Sanusi frowned on “sole proprietorship” of banks because of deep concerns over internal checks and control, he was convinced after the review of the ETB case that the decision to restore Adenuga to the ETB board was the fair and professional step to take, particularly since no criminal infraction that could dislocate the Nigerian economy was perpetrated in ETB when Adenuga served on the Board as non-executive director.

The CBN, it was also gathered, was unwilling to inject government money into ETB, a private limited company with a few shareholders. It is not quoted on the stock exchange.

The new move by the CBN is seen as buttressing the position of the CBN Governor in the wake of the reform in the banking sector that it has no ethnic coloration.

Following his confirmation as the CBN Governor by the Senate, Sanusi promised to make risk management, reporting and regulation as his three key areas of focus.

Many analysts are of the opinion that the ongoing reform in the banking sector will grow local and international confidence in the Nigerian economy.
Eight bank MDs have been sacked since the August 14 intervention in banks by the CBN over issues of liquidity, capital adequacy and corporate governance. The banks affected are Intercontinental, Oceanic, Union, Afribank, FinBank, BankPHB, Spring and ETB.

The sack of ETB chief executive and the removal of Adenuga as a non-executive director took many analysts by surprise because of the profile of Dr. Adenuga, a highly respected entrepreneur and one of the biggest employers of labour in the country.

I can't understand why he is always in a hurry.

Hes always lending credence to the much touted conspiracy theory.

My sentiments too. He can be brash. Of course Adenuga is no angel but SLS should have have pre-empted such.

whatever sanusi is doing in the banking industry is commendable. he wants to sanitize nigerian banks but his methodology is zero. at first he disgraced the directors of some five banks out of office and there was panic. the same cbn went on air to calm the people. secondly, another set of directors were shown the way out and now he's considering re-instating one of them? clearly, the integrity of the audit exercise is questionable. who knows, after now he might realise that during the second round of audit, those banks with offshore branches transfered their non performing loans to their offshore branches. what will he do then?
Re: CBN Moves To Return ETB To Adenuga by dancewith: 5:27pm On Oct 23, 2009
sanusi is a fool. for asking the sole benefactor of a bank to quit just out of jealousy should have been clear to all Nigerians to see in the first place. Can he ever achieve what this man has done for this country? All he knows is to pull successful people down using bogus claims. If we have 100 of the likes of Adenuga the country will be a lot better and many graduates won't be patrolling the streets. I am only too aware the number of graduates Cecilia has taken off the streets. and others. sanusi should realise he won't be there forever. Ribadu and El Rufai is a living example. The day of his judgement will come some day and there won't be any mercy

Thumbs up for Otunba (Dr) Mike Adenuga, one of Nigeria's great ambassadors. Only God knows why bad people are always after the good ones. I knew he was gonna be re-instated from the outset 'cos they were just witch-hunting the innocent philantropist. All thesame kudos to Sanusi for taking that bold step. WELCOME BACK OTUNBA, LONG LIVE THE "ADENUGA GROUP", LONG LIVE NIGERIA!

What about the executives in the bank (ETB) he had sacked earlier. Adenuga is only highly connected, that's my take on this. Abi you think say Olorogun (Ibru) no get $150 million ? Remember the Adenuga/IBB link !
Afterall he is not just donating the money to the bank, the money is still his.

Re: CBN Moves To Return ETB To Adenuga by adigun101: 8:34pm On Oct 23, 2009
Take nothing away from Adenuga, I respect the man too but was IBRU given an equal opportunity ? There is a feeling of cherry picking here. The bank failed CBNs audit and the executives including Adenuga were sacked for "allegedly"  mismanaging the bank. Adenuga recapitalised the bank with $150 million as a majority shareholder with core interests. Does that really justify his re-appointment, while excluding the others like Oraekwotu (Abi na becos e no get money like Adenuga ?)
There is a very obvious moral hole here.
Why are Nigerians easily hoodwinked all the time by the same people ?

Please don't forget that CBN said they did not find criminal activities like insider trading and so on, in their ETB audit unlike the oceanic bank fracas

So why did they sack himm in the first place ? For failing to capitalise the bank adequately ? undecided

so no serious infraction was found during auditing of ETB and the MD and Otunba Mike were sacked/removed from his bank.
SLS/CBN want to return Adenuga, what about the MD. no apology for both of them bah
I think this SLS should be sue for all the embarassment and damages.
i believe more revelations are on there way,

may God save us, help nigeria from evilsssssssss

You may have to get in first before u know the real situation.

And being in a hurry is a welcome development in this slow administration. I thought we all wanted fast people.

It is a good decision by the CBN governor. But can they've discussed this internally before sacking them in the first place.

Imo adenuga is one of the people who knws hw to do business. If no wrongdoing is pinned to him .Then he is free. It tells u dat dangote, otedola and ibrahim re not as rich as mike adenuga. As events has shown us dat our so called richest man in 9ja is the biggest debtor too. How ironic

Really this Sanusi of a guy is showing that he is not fit for the office he occupies, Or why would he unplug Adenuga and now want to re-plug him? Why not send the bank chiefs on leave or better still give them ultimatums to get back bad loans? I bet his arse also can't be that clean if we were to check, yuck! Anyways I've heard that all the grags his to put his fear into the hearts of the Bankers so they know how to settle well. Houses in the Bahamas would not be a bad idea Abi?
Re: CBN Moves To Return ETB To Adenuga by numen(m): 7:06am On Nov 06, 2009
This is a clear case of leaping before thinking. If Sanusi did his audit well, he would have found out that Adenuga did no money laundering or wateva. And instead of removing him and embarrassing him by that fact, he would have suggested to them to raise their capital base.

This man has is so unfit for his job and like it or not, there are both political and ethnic undertone to all of his actions right from his assumption of office.

I wonder what would be sanctioned or reversed next!
