In the wake of the iconic 10th of Muharram that went by, being aware of Shia's self-flagellation in celebrating the day, I took a journey to YouTube to see how true is it for a human being to flagellate him/herself.

Lo and behold, with basic search keyword of "shia self-flagellation", I received the shock of my life. Suppose sane men are causing themselves such high degree of self-injury in the name of Islam. I know Allah (SWT) forbade us not to drink alcohol cause of its after effect that might be injurious to us, so also smoking. So, I was taken aback to see fellow Muslims celebrate an iconic day in Islam in such gruesome manner.

Now, to my question, who ordained shia to be doing self-flagellation? Which hadith or Qur'an support the activity?

P.S: I am a dispassionate Muslim that will welcome answer from both Sunni and Shia.

There is no basis for that and they are sinning as it is forbidden in islam to deliberately inflict oneself with injury. Allah knows best

Flagellation is not the only baseless misguidance practiced by shia. Some others include:

#Solah thrice daily instead of five.

# Cursing the Prophet's wives.

# wiping the feet instead of washing during ablution

#pledging allegiance to Ali rodiyaLLaahu anhu during adhan and iqaamah.

#visiting graves in karbala, they even claim that it's better than a thousand hajj!

# saying the Quran has been distorted

#raising Ali rodiyaLLaahu anhu above the messenger alyhissolaat wassalaam

#Some of their sheikhs even raise him to divinity



And many other craps that they say, believe and call to.
