WORLD-FOOTBALL governing body, FIFA has stated that Nigeria will qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa.

A representative of FIFA, Mr Emmanuel Maradas, said this at the viewing of the World Cup trophy which took place on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to Maradas, Nigeria has the capacity and what it takes to qualify for the big tournament.

Disclosing that what happened with the game against Tunisia was an accident, Maradas said the country would definitely be among the 32 countries that would display their talents at the big event.

On the global tour of the World Cup trophy, the FIFA representative said the objective was to ignite a global celebration of football, as one unique passion that unified the world and to give football fans across the world an extraordinary opportunity to experience football most-prized trophy.

Speaking in the same vein, the Minister of Sports, Engr. Sani Ndanusa, who was represented by Dr Patrick Ekeji, disclosed that Nigeria remained in the race, notwithstanding its slim chance in the qualifiers.

“It is our duty to hold on to that slim chance, it is never over until it is over,” Ndanusa said.

Earlier, Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola Nigeria, Mr. Allan Rhyme, said the occasion was a celebration of football, adding that it was very important since African was hosting the tournament for the first time in the history of the World Cup.

Rhyme, who said the company had been partnering with Nigeria in sports development over the last 25 years, promised to do more as occasion demands.

The World Cup trophy is designed by an Italian and was chosen by FIFA out of about 153 designs presented to the world football-governing body.

It is 36cm in height and made of 18 carat gold, it has been taken to a number of
countries in Africa.
