10 Reasons Ibadan Is Better Than Lagos -hashimyussufamao by Hashimyussufamao(m): 7:43pm On Oct 22, 2016 |
Over the years, many Nigerians have debated
whether Ibadan is better than Lagos with
remarks been tossed like grenades across both
sides. Sometimes, we are caught in a web of
fierce argument about the two cities. However,
Ibadan and Lagos are famous and great cities in
the country.
Ibadan, the largest city in Nigeria has become
an upmarket city, popularly known as the
‘Largest City of Africa'; but Lagos is the one of
the smallest city in Africa that best combines the
diversities, character, foibles and strengths of
Nigeria. We have highlighted 10 reasons Ibadan
is better than Lagos:
1. THE COST OF LIVING
Have you ever wondered why almost everyone
wants to be in Ibadan instead of Lagos even
though it is better developed and prettier? The
reason is simple! Ibadan is a city that is very
affordable to live no matter your social status. It
has become the home of everyone which means
that you can comfortably live in Ibadan with
little compared to the luxury lifestyle in Lagos.
2. THE LARGEST CITY IN WEST AFRICA
Let us face it, when it comes to the Largest
Cities in the world, Ibadan is definitely one
unlike Lagos, you can never know all the towns
or places in Ibadan in 7 days, there are some
places that would take you 2 hours to get to
from Challenge or the Toll gate of the city,
Ibadan has the Largest Shoprite Mall in West
Africa and even the premier University in Nigeria
is in Ibadan is another city of it own. Ibadan is
definitely a center of attraction.
3. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, YOU CAN FIND AN
AFFORDABLE APARTMENT IN IBADAN
Yes, we know that the holy grail of Lagos
expensive urban real estate is out there, But in
Ibadan, there are thousands of very affordable
apartments even in urban real estates in the
city. The rent in Ibadan is not always as
expensive as what Lagos would offer you. In an
estate in Ibadan, with 200k, you will get a
conducive 3 bedroom apartment with tiles,
water and other facilities but in Lagos, a room
and parlour self contain cost more than even
200k.
4. CONTAGIOUS LIFESTYLE
If you’ve ever lived in Lagos and Ibadan, you
would be quick to point out the boring social life
that hovers around Lagos, almost 50% of people
in Lagos live fake lives, but the social life setting
that you embrace in Ibadan may never leave
you. There are lots of necessary social
behaviours in Ibadan, like the small talks,
fashion, communication and socialization that
run deep in every fibre of Ibadan. Ibadan is
where life begins socially and spread to other
parts of Nigeria even to Lagos.
5. TOURISM MERGES WITH ADVENTURE IN
IBADAN
Ibadan is always bursting with activities with its
posh hotels, restaurants, malls, nightclubs and
places to explore. This city has become the face
of tourism compared to Lagos.what does Lagos
have other than beaches, the National Theatre,
and so on. You can immerse yourself in deep
cultures, surroundings and histories- from
spiritual shrines, zoo, malls, gardens, museums,
buildings, tower, roundabouts, schools, parks
and many more. The tourism journey in Ibadan
always gives a worthy run for your money
because the fun never ends. Little wonder,
thousands of tourists visit Ibadan to have a
lifetime experience.
6. CHEAP TRANSPORTATION
The transportation system in Ibadan is far lower
than that of Lagos. The high cost of ‘special
drops’ can be discouraging and to compound
your challenge in Lagos, trekking may be a
Hercules task but in Ibadan, 50 naira can take
you to a lot of plans, If in Ibadan, a cab man or
bike man charges you 100, just know you are
going on a very long journey...A very Long one!
7. HOME OF ENTERTAINMENT
It is only in Ibadan that you see the highest
number of celebrities and entertainers living in
Nigeria. The city is vibrant with lots of social
functions happening almost every day. Indeed,
there is no dull moment in Ibadan because it is
a city where talents are born and grown. Lagos
might has earned its name not only as the
music and movies birthplace, but where
entertainment is done better than anywhere in
Nigeria is in Ibadan. 60% of our big names today
in Nigeria started from Ibadan, like Olu
Maintain, Dr Sid, Sean Tizzle, 90% of our
Nollywood celebrities too..even those that didn't
start in Ibadan runs to Ibadan. For example, list
to a typical Olamide Album, he can't do without
screaming Ibadan.
8. SOCIAL VIBES – PARTIES AND NIGHTLIFE
Have you ever spent your weekend in Ibadan?
The vibe is felt in the air and the parties
colourful, engaging, wild and sometimes crazy.
There is no rule on how parties are going to be
held, which means that you’ve got an array of
choices for clubs, hookup spots, bars and hotels
all waiting for you to join in the fun. People
come to Ibadan to celebrate their weekends
because that is where the social activities make
the difference.
9. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
It is easier to get a job in Ibadan unlike Lagos,
where it is nearly impossible for one to get a
job. With many international companies, small
businesses and local investments in Lagos, there
is always an employment opportunity. The
metropolis has become a land of opportunity for
thousands of Nigerians who come with nothing
and end up very comfortable later.
10. IBADAN HAS A SENSE OF SOLIDARITY AND
LOVE
Love is always in the air in Ibadan unlike Lagos
where everyone is like an island. Talk about
solidarity and support for a clause, it all begins
in Ibadan. Sympathy is quickly shared and
support is gotten fast because everyone minds
everyone’s business. A visit to Lagos would
convince you that you are definitely on your
own with its peculiar way of life even among
neighbours. Nigerians living in Lagos live the
fake lifestyle due to the high standard of living.
Ibadan appreciates Talent, do you know it's only
in Ibadan, we have our own Artists, record
labels, comedians, even Olamide said in one of
his songs, 1million in Ibadan don do me...it's
because Ibadan people show Love and
Solidarity.. 1 Like |

I live in lagos and have visited Ibadan on several occasions, so i think i'm in a good position to compare both cities. I believe that any two cities in the world can be compared to each other. Even Ife can be compared to New York as it definitely will have something that will make it better than NY. It doesn't necessarily mean that one city is better than the other overall. It just means that, when considering some variables, one is better than the other and vice versa. Let me tackle you point one after the other. 1) One of the positive things people say about Ibadan is how affordable things are over there especially food and accommodation. Now, under no circumstance should you compare the cost of things in other Nigerian cities with what it obtained in Lagos and Abuja because these places don't have the kind of grandeur that you find in Lagos. The more developed (not urbanized) a place is, the more expensive things are bound to get. Ibadan for instance, is not cheaper than other urbanized (not developed) areas in Nigeria. Can someone prove to me that things are cheaper in Ibadan compared to Akure, Ado Ekiti, Abeokuta, Osogbo, Kaduna and Makurdi? The only reason why that of Ibadan usually stressed is because of how large the city is. Which takes me to your second point. 2) The term "The largest city in Sub-saharan Africa" not "Africa" is one that can just be used as bragging right and in no way makes it better than even a city that is one tenth it's size. So, a city been large just has a lot to do with landmass and nothing else. Actually, what i've said so far covers the other points you made. Like i said earlier, Ibadan thumps Lagos in some areas like you have pointed out but i can assure you that if Ibadan had the amount of business and human population that Lagos has, things will be just as expensive as Lagos. 5 Likes |
