While how Gov.Nyesom Wike got to the Rivers State Government House is now a common knowledge and generally referred to as the bloodiest path to power, many people have either turned blind eyes or deaf ears to the usual controversies that have characterised his administration thus far. Two key things have continued in Rivers State under Gov. Wike; General insecurity of lives and property including the continuous massacre of citizens, especially members of the opposition. The continuous politicization of almost every activity of the government. Rivers State is the only state in Nigeria where a sitting governor never makes a statement without a direct use of threat of violence or attacks on government institutions. Here, everything begins and ends with politics. While other states have taken to the path of development, Rivers State under Wike is still politicking and doing Window-dressing development characterised by filling of potholes, completing nearly completed projects by previous administration and taking all the glories while inviting politicians from far and near to witness the launching and paying huge sums of money to air it on live television usually African Independent Television {AIT}, the Pro- PDP station. Rivers State has continued to suffer severely with workers and pensioners been owed for as much as eight months despite huge federal allocations, internally generated revenue and about N300billion worth of loans so far collected by the governor. Recently, Gov. wike claim he has constructed over 80 roads worth over N90B. However, whether this is true or false, a visit to Portharcourt and the locations of the purported road projects and its nature will convince you better. But a clue is that some of the ‘newly’ constructed roads are either flooded or failing already. Back to the crux of this piece, Gov. wike recently inaugurated a 151 man committee to see to the state’s Golden Jubilee Celebration. The glaring thing here to any conscientious person is the size of the list of members. Why 151? Imagine how much the members of this so-called committee will earn within the duration of their assignment. To show how everything in Rivers State is defined exclusive by politics, the entire membership of the committee is made up of politicians. And the characters of most of the people on the list are extremely questionable. Rivers state people and Nigerians should therefore not expect anything meaningful from this committee. It is just another means of settling the ‘boys’ while the real issues of governance are unattended to. Take for instance, Lagos just like Rivers will soon also clock fifty {50}. And what a visionary Gov.Ambode that is governing over a state with the capabilities and potentials of been a country did was to set up only a 12 man committee. Morally and financially compare a 151 man committee to a 12 man committee, and you can’t but pity Rivers state under this current administration. Lagos state to the best of my knowledge is not owing its workforce even to the tune of eight months and in the midst of its wealth I can attest that her 50 Celebration will be more modest and economically beneficial to the state than the jamboree and looting spree set to take place in Rivers State. Compare even the composition; while Lagos committee is chaired by renowned laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka with other reputable individuals that of Rivers State is chaired by a renowned politician, Chief Ferdinard Anabrabra. For the records, here is the Lagos list: 1. Prof. Wole Soyinka – Co- Chairman 2. Mr. Rasheed Gbadamosi -Co- Chairman 3. Hon. Habeeb Fasinro – Member 4. Chief Olawale Cole – Member 5. You are being sarcastic right? A committee chaired by Alabraba is what you are disparaging? With OCJ, Peter side, Wigwe, lulu Briggs, Onyiuke, Mitee et all. Are you mad? |

Marotzke:See it differently. Yes they may have their onus but unlike what is obtainable elsewhere, everyone on the Rivers List are core politicians and among the kitchen or parlour cabinet of the governor. Despite their alternative careers, they are all pro-wike and members of his party. Unlike politically neutral persons on the Lagos list. Such ocassion is to galvanise all sons and daughters of the state, so it isn't the best means of political compensation. 1 Like |
