President Obama will make a statement around midday on Wednesday about the results of the election, the White House said, in which he will call on the nation to come together after a divisive campaign. Hillary Clinton gave her concession speech, which came on Wednesday hours after an early-morning conversation for which Mrs. Clinton and her team were entirely unprepared: a phone call from Mrs. Clinton to Donald J. Trump, conceding the presidential race. Mr. Trump’s victory has set the political world on its end. Never has such an untested and unlikely candidate captured the presidency, and no one in modern times has entered the office with his plans for governing so uncertain. She told her supporters that they must accept that Mr. Trump will be president. “We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead,” she said. • After a long campaign, Mrs. Clinton acknowledged that the loss cuts deep. “This is painful, and it will be for a long time,” she said. • Mrs. Clinton said that she hopes citizens will still fight for the values that she promoted in her campaign and that “the American dream is big enough for everyone.” However, she acknowledged that the country was more divided than she realized. • Mrs. Clinton saluted President Obama’s “graceful” leadership, and thanked her family for buttressing her during a grueling campaign. • Mrs. Clinton expressed regret that she did not shatter the glass ceiling, but said, “Someday, someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now.” • Mrs. Clinton tried to lift the spirits of her supporters by advising them to never give up on their dreams. “I’ve had successes and I’ve had setbacks – sometimes really painful ones,” she said. “This loss hurts, but please, never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it.” • To the women who supported her, Mrs. Clinton said that “nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.” • In conclusion, Mrs. Clinton urged the country to “let us not grow weary, let us not lose heart.” • Senator Tim Kaine, who spoke first, said “I’m proud of Hillary Clinton because she has been and is a great history maker,” pointing to her long career of public service.
