LAGOS State government on Friday recorded another breakthrough as its partner, a transformer manufacturing company, the El-Sewedy, located in Ibereko Badagry, released its first set of locally made transformers.

The Commissioner for Rural development, Prince Lanre Balogun, made this known at a news conference, adding that the Egyptian company had since supplied the government with 15 transformers.

Balogun, accompanied by his counterpart for information and strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, said that the local transformer was made of copper material instead of aluminum and would be distributed to communities free.

According to him, it was the first time a transformer would be made locally, adding, “This will go a long way to reduce the problem of epileptic supply of electricity in the state.”

The transformer, Balogun noted, is a dry cell type, saying that it was more durable than most of the imported ones and would be available in open market in the nearest future.

Commenting, the Special Adviser to the state governor on commerce and industry, Mrs. Sola Oworu, said that the establishment of transformer manufacturing company was one of the plans of the government to solve the problem of power supply in the state.

According to her, the company would be producing about 100 transformers for 18 months and will go on large scale production in the nearest future.

“Our plan is to export it and supply adequately to satisfy our local needs,” Oworu said.
