Lyon Vs Liverpool [1 - 1] On Wednesday,4th November by Cristalz(f): 11:21am On Nov 02, 2009 |
In Group E, Lyon welcome Liverpool to the Stade De Gerland for the return leg of their UCL tie. Lyon currently lead the group with 9 points, while Liverpool have got 3. Their 2-1 victory at Anfield on Matchday 3 has put Lyon in control of Group E and leaves Liverpool knowing a fifth straight win on French soil is crucial to revive their fortunes. Lyon are seeking a third straight home win in the competition after victories against RSC Anderlecht in the play-off round, and then ACF Fiorentina. Coach Claude Puel has succeeded in building a formidable team so far this season. Lisandro Lopez, Sidney Govou, and Gomis remain danger names to look out for in attack. Between the three, a good amount of goals have been recorded so far. Toulalan and Delgado(who scored in the 1st leg) are strong midfield choices for Claude Puel. No major changes are expected in defense; a back line similar to the one used at Anfield will be used in France as well. As always, defender Cissokho remains an extra 'striker' for Lyon. A good defender with equally good attacking tendencies, he will surely trouble the Liverpool back line. With 9 points, Lyon are in no danger of not qualifying for the KO stages. A loss/draw will do no serious harm, but they will definitely be looking for a win. Liverpool are the EPL club on nearly everyone's observation radar presently. Things haven't been too bright for the club of recent. Liverpool lost the 1st leg of the tie at home despite putting up a considerably good performance. In that game, they were without Fernando Torres, and had Stevie Gerrard for only a while. For this game Fernando Torres will be available, although he is not yet 100% fit. But, his club needs him at this point in time. Liverpool need to win to keep their hopes of progressing further in the competition afloat. . .a third successive defeat will leave them barely in it. Other striking options for Benitez include David Ngog, Voronin, and Dirk Kuyt. Whoever Benitez decides to go with will have to seriously up his game, because Fernando Torres cannot do it all alone, especially as he isn't fully fit. Kuyt is a more reliable option, while Ngog should be the first sub option. In midfield, Benitez's new buy, Aquilani is expected back. Aquilani has been down with a virus; we can expect to see him on Wednesday night though. Aquilani, Benayoun, and Mascherano can provide the necessary strength in the middle. If they work really hard, Gerrard's absence will not be seriously felt. Lucas, Babel and Jay Spearing are available options for the midfield. In defense, Glen Johnson is expected back for this game. His presence will be a considerable boost for the back line. Carragher has not been impressive of late, but Benitez might start him because of his UCL experience. Skrtel, Insua and Agger are also likely options. Whichever 4 Benitez decides to go with, a lot will be expected of them because the Lyon attack force is a lot to contend with. If Liverpool bring the same drive and determination they brought against Manchester United, they stand a good chance. If their strikers focus completely on accuracy and the defense holds, they can win. Lyon have got home advantage, and they are in good form so they look more likely to win. . .but it's Liverpool. When it comes to the UCL, Liverpool are always full of surprises, most of them positive. |

chances are L'pool will win but what happens after ![]() the players will play with passion; the kop will migrate from anfield to lyon and provide enuf fuel to ignite the atmosphere. . . . but what happens afterwards ![]() its better that they lose and drop out of the UCL; not a thot l'pool fans would suscribe to, but in the long-run as far as this season is concerned, it'd do the club a world of good! |

slimshay: inadvertently, priorities would have been straightened out for LFC. the club can then focus on what they have in hand; ligue & FA Cup - perharps then we'll see Rafa make better use of his squad & hopefully, we won't see a repeat of what happened at the weekend in Fulham where even the players on the field were in total disagreement with the manager's decisions! |

Rafa's priority has been very clear since he took the job. Liverpool are going on 2 decades without a premiership title. they want another one. |

If Liverpool keep this pressure up they will get a goal before the half is up. Of course it could be a repeat of the 1st leg where Liverpool played better and lost, but letz hope not. |
