Today is going to my first day in school, perhaps that why I spent all night twisting and turning around on my bed. I don't know if I'm excited or nervous but I know I feel uneasy in a way that I can't explain.

Two weeks ago when the admission list came out, I became a student of university of Lagos. I'll be studying Architecture. A Lot of people complain about how hard is was to get admitted into a school like Unilag but not me.... My Mom knows someone that knows someone who knew a man that spoke to a lady that made sure my name was on the first admission list.

Now here I am, preparing for my first day as an undergraduate.

Mom: Hello Son! Are you sure you don't want me to go with you?

That's my Mom! Always wanting to go everywhere with me. I had no idea when she entered my room. She always do that.... entering my room without knocking. she caught me a couple of times watching porn but that's a story for another day.

Me: No Mom! it's my first day in the University not High school....you can't come with me okay? sometimes you forget I'm an adult

Mom: Yea yea... you're 17

Me: Nooooo mom! I'm 19

Mom: Oh my God! Really? 19? How come? I still remember that day I held you in my arms.....

Mom & I (together) :... and kiss that small round head of yours

Me: Yes yes yes.... Mom you've said that same phrase a million times.

Now that's my Mom for you, she never stops talking about the day she "held me in her arms and kissed that small round head of mine"

Me: Mom! I'll be fine okay? By the way, Yemi will be here soon, he's driving me to school

Mom: Oh! You boys need to drive carefully. Don't get too excited okay?

Yemi is my childhood friend, we've been in the same school all our lives and I can call him my best friend. Now we've both been admitted into Unilag, he'll be studying Civil Engineering.

Honk! Honk! Honk!

Me: Right on time! Yemi is here now. I have to go Mom.

Mom: Okay.... I helped pack your food

Me: Oh my freaking God Mom! I'm now a university student, there's absolutely no need to take food to school

Mom: emmm... really? But you'll be very hungry

Me: I'll get something to eat later on

Mom: Alright.... I Love you Son

I mumbled some words, grabbed my phones and backpack and made my out of the house. Yemi's new car, a Toyota Highlander jeep was parked right opposite our gate, Olamide's Shakiti Bobo was blasting from the car stereo even as the glass were rolled up.

I got into the passenger side, shook Yemi's hand and settled well in the car seat.

Yemi: So.... is she coming?

Me: Is who coming?

Yemi: Your Mom of course! Your one and only girlfriend. (laughing)

Me: I'll punch you right now o. Just start the car and let's leave this place before she comes out and ask if you have a driver's license.

Yemi: Hahahaha... sometimes I think the only reason you haven't been able to have a stable relationship is because you're dating your mom already (hahahaha)

Me: Yemi.... let's go jare!

Yemi: Hahaha.... we're picking my cousin and his friend up on our way.

Me: your cousin... emmm... Stephen?

Yemi: Yea! I understand you guys don't like each other

Me: How can we like each other? That idiot snatched my girlfriend by buying her a bottle of Lacasera and Gala.

Yemi: Hahaha... actually, it was just a bottle of Lacasera....she bought the Gala herself.

Me: whatever... How the hell did he get admitted into Unilag sef? I'm sure that N*gger can't spell his own name.

Yemi: hahahaha... C'mon Man

Me: He's the type of guy that spells you as Y-H-U and even if the phone auto-corrects him, he'll go back and change it to Y-H-U because that's how dumb he is.

Yemi: Hahahaha


Yea that's the true story, I never liked Stephen and I'm sure I'll never like him. I spent 3 weeks plotting my move on a beautiful girl in high school and all of a sudden he bought her Lacasera drink and they both disappeared behind the class.

Yemi pulled over in front of a gate and honked just like he did at my house. Two minutes had gone before the gates flung open and Stephen stepped out wearing a red jean, white round-necked top and a red and white sneakers

Stephen : Yo cousin what's up? (looks at me) How you doing, fool?

Me: I was doing good until you came out of that gate looking like Father Christmas...

Stephen : What is wrong with what I'm wearing?

Me: You look like a freaking Airtel network ambassador man, that's what is wrong with what you're wearing.

Stephen: I'm wearing the latest designer stuffs fool! You're just angry I look better than you.

Yemi: Hahaha... stop it both of you jor! Stephen, where's your friend na?

Me: I'm sure the guy saw what he's wearing and left to commit suicide.

Stephen : Then you should go and commit suicide too na.... we'll pick him up over there jare Yemi.

Yemi started the car and moved towards the other gate, he honked 3 times and the gate opened.... a guy our age stepped out and.... he was wearing red and white too! A blue Jean, white vest and a red jacket.... and yes.... red sneakers too.

Me: I'm certain something is definitely wrong with you people. What's with the red and white sef??

Stephen : while you were at home under your Mom, the world left you behind... now wearing white and red is the new trend.

Me: Say something about my Mom again and these red and white you're wearing will be the last red and white you'll ever wear.

The other guy opened the car door and stepped in, he said hello to everyone and we greeted him back.

Stephen : So guys.... this is AY, my neighbor and Friend. AY this is my Cousin, Yemi and his friend, Joseph

We all shook hands like normal guys but it was obvious there was nothing normal about us... we are a bunch of freaks having two guys looking like Santa Claus!

Stephen : JAYS......JAYS......JAYS

Me: Are you alright?

Stephen : that's the combination of all our names.... JAYS.... Joseph, AY, Yemi and Stephen. We can form a group.

Me: Hell No! What yeye group ?

Stephen : a group of friends.

Me: first of all.... you're not my friend. Second of all... emmm... you're still not my friend.

AY: I heard there's always an award for the best clique... we can be four good looking guys who are rich and run things! we'll be like the freshest freshers on campus

Stephen : sounds like a good idea.

Me: sounds like a bunch of gays to me

Stephen : Dude... do you need to go home and ask your mom for permission?

Me: I told you not to mention my Mom again... guy... the thunder that will strike you is still doing mannequin challenge

I guess it's time I explain to you why I'm being called a mommy's boy. I have been with my mom all my life, the only thing I know about my Dad is that he was a jerk who got Mom pregnant and bolted away like 20 years ago. Mom told me he came back when I was 2-years old, spent a few nights and then left after he stole my baby crib and sold it to a furniture man close by. Sometimes I hate it when people came around the house and exclaimed at how much I'm growing up to look like my Runaway father.

My mom never remarried, not because there weren't interested men but she just couldn't find one that was good enough to be my step-father. Mom had me when she was just 17, now she's 36 but looks 28. Whenever we go to the mall together, people give me faces because we walk around holding hands.... there was an incident that happened one time but that's a story for another day.

I looked up and realized we were already at the school gate, as we drove in, head were turning and eyeing up the jeep we were in. Some guy dance to my side of the car and raised a flyer towards the window. I rolled down the glass and took it from him.

It was a party flyer... "freshers' night" was written on it. But before I could read the next line, Stephen snatched it from me.

Stephen : O boy! It's a party for freshers o! We have to go.

Yemi: Steve.... we haven't been inside the school for up to five minutes and you're already thinking about partying.

Me: Don't mind the guy.. does he even know where his faculty and department is?

Stephen : I have a good 4 years for that one but this party... we have to attend... we are the JAYS

Me: JAYS ko, Gays ni

I said that, hissed and I looked up and that's when I saw her... the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. she wore a jean trouser and a Polo top, she was casually dressed unlike all the girls I've been seeing since we entered the campus. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, the breeze slowly blowing it as she walk in beautiful strides. Someone greeted her and she replied with a smile. Her smile was contagious because I started smiling too for absolutely no reason.

In one swift action, opened the car door and stepped out, Stephen said something but I didn't care to know what it was, I just moved in her direction, walking fast to catch up with her.

Me: Hello! Good morning

Her: Good morning.

She paused to look at me. She was even more beautiful up close, her smile was bright and she had hazy eyes, she wore a mild make-up and I wondered why she even bothered. I knew I had to say something but that was when I realized I hadn't make any plan before approaching her. When she realized I was not going to say anything else, she increased her pace.

I knew I had to say something, anything....i was thinking fast... and then I said

Me: I like you! Can I have your number?

Gosh!!! That came out wrong! She looked at me and smiled.

Her: I'm sorry I don't give out my number to strangers... my apologies

Me: But how can we be friends if you don't......

Her: (cuts in) I'm sorry... my class starts in 5 minutes and I have to go

She started walking off....

Me: emmm... I'm Joseph! Joseph Manny!

Her: Okay then....

She kept walking......

Me: Please.... will I see you again

Her: ....If you're lucky

She was farther away now so I had to raise my voice

Me: emmm... em.... sorry? I didn't catch your name...

Her: (raised her voice) : You didn't catch it? Well ....I didn't throw it!

She said that, smiled, took a corner and disappeared into the crowd. I kept playing back the whole scenario in my head till I got back to the car where the others were waiting for the gist.

AY: Guy... you sharp die! you don follow girl already.

Yemi : damn Joseph! That girl was hot... simple but smoking hot! very beautiful too.

Stephen : Was she beautiful? Me I wasn't looking at her face. Shey none of you see her Y**sh ni? E curve like map of Africa

Me: You guys have no idea.... she was even more beautiful up close.

Stephen : so... when are you seeing her again?

Me: I don't know.

Yemi: What's her name?

Me: emm... I ....don't know that either

AY: But you at least got her number right?

Me: emmm... not really! but I will see her again

Stephen : see her again? You na mumu.... there are about 39k female students in this school and you want to find one girl without knowing her name, her number or what course she's studying.

Me: I just know I'll see her again.... I have to

Stephen : Keep dreaming! Abeg Yemi... let's go and see your department first jare.

Yemi started the car and began moving, the 3 of them laughed at a joke but I wasn't paying attention. My mind was filled with the thought of my mystery girl. I have to see her again and I know exactly how I'm going to see her again, I'll tell you but that's just a story for another day.
