Hire the best professors?most of their lecturers are adhoc and gotten from other public universities. When I was in school(OAU), I had about 10 of my lecturers in the faculty of engineering lecturing part-time in covenant university. These private uni's are just a rip-off. You pay all of these every year, graduate and then you can't still compete in the labour market with your counterparts from the public unis(with the exception of covenant grads)
EFX001:
If church universities are to be free? How would they hire the best professors? How will the research be done? when the government have failed and the country is in hyperinflation....una come the face Chruch universities. @OP you are Sick!

These schools are not run from church members' tithes! They are run from the excessive fees they levy on their students.
HigherEd:

There is no free school anywhere in the world. When citizens don't pay for it the govt pays. Germany which is tuition free levy's heavy taxes on its citizens to cover education costs in these universities.....

The difference is that while a German can be jailed for not paying his taxes you can't be forced to paying church donations. You can simply walk away and attend another church. If the church had predicated its own activities on your income then the church schools can shut down simply because one member no longer pays tithe.

You are barely making sense.

Covenant University for example wasn't built to stroke church leadership ego, it was conceived VOA a divine vision from God as long as 2 decades back and the visioner - Oyedepo never hid it but told the whole world from his small auditorium back then. The vision for a 50,000 seat church was also given. same thing too for the live transmission of messages to nations of the earth before satellite devices became commercially available. These are divine mandates and not ego massaging stunts.

$10,000 - university fees in America? Please don't make me laugh. Most poor or middle families in this same america you mentioned start saving for their children's university fees almost as soon as they are born, and in a lot of cases, the students take loans from the government that they struggle to pay back for decades. And even at that, how many graduates do $75,000 immediately after university?

In respect to Level 15 civil servants being upper class, you couldn't be more wrong -at best they are middle-class. Thats how poor their pay is.
Level 15 officer is upper class by Nigerian (income) standards. Don't be silly.
$10,000 - $15,000 per annum is the average foreign students pay in standard schools in the US, do Ur research.
And yes, a graduate earns an average of 60,000 to 75,000 USD per annum, before taxes. Even if they earn only $50,000, Someone with kids of University age would have advanced reasonably in his career to earn more than this. Again, do Ur research.
Don't support every nonsense from men of God because u are hoping for supernatural blessings from God, on their word. It doesn't work that way. U are only clouding Ur reasoning

Lol you must be joking right.
Who stopped anyone from taking student loans to attend Covenant?
Saying an average middle class can afford US university means you don't know what you are talking about. The student debt in the US is $1.5 trillion. Meaning most are taking loans they can't pay till they die.
Bros, whenever I see ur Monika on my mentions, I don't bother replying to argue. Ur case is hopeless when it comes to matters such as this. Facts are:
1. Private church universities are not affordable. This is bad because it limits their ability to make the greatest impact in the society. Impacting on the lives of a few wealthy kids have not, and will never make the difference in Nigeria. Am sure u won't be stupid enough to dispute this. Most of those kids are either too isolated from the common Nigerian or even leave the country when they graduate.

2. I won't dispute the fact that the high costs in some schools like covenant is worth it. At least there, the students get real value for money, but that does not solve the problem of affordability.

3. Personally, I believe that when the cost\benefit analysis is carried out, most courses taught in these schools are not worth the high fees paid on them in terms of marketability in the Nigerian labour market. No matter how rich I am, I won't pay outrageous tuition for my ward to study business management, economics, mass communication, international relations, mathematics, statistics, etc. Plain waste of funds.

Although I'm often uncomfortable as to churches owning universities, the truth is that it is exorbitantly expensive to fund universities. As far back as 2006, I remember a Private University's V.C telling me that it cost upwards of 100m to run generators for the hostels per semester; I wonder how much that would cost 12 years later.Government owned universities despite TETFUND and government subsidies are barely getting by, hence the endless ASUU strikes - how much more privately-owned universities?

To show you how subsidized university education has become, an increasing number of state-owned universities have begun to charge fees that a few years ago would have been unthinkable. Until we start to move away from the mindset that university education should be free or dirt-cheap, we would never make progress in advancing the quality of university education in Nigeria.
God bless you. Many Nigerians have that stereotype thinking that education is cheap. Many from public university graduate haven't for once asked how the school source for fund to meet up. Salaries and wages alone comes from government's subvention. The tuition fee and the IGR generated can't cater for other operational cost like maintenance of generators, buying of diesel, maintenance of hostels etc. They still need to rely on the government for fund. Those graduate keep criticizing what they don't know but it will be dawn on them when they start running their own universities. They haven't for once wonder why lecturers keep going on strike.

Your argument is vague my brother. it's like saying since gay/lesbianism is accepted and celebrated in some churches in western countries, so it must be accepted here too. I don't evewant to go into the argument of who are the current owner of most of these top universities you're referring to here because it's not important for the sake of this argument; UK, USA, CANADA, FRANCE, e.t.c are not in the same league as Nigeria in so many ways. their citizens don't struggle to pay school fees; In most of these countries, education is basically free for her citizens and in their privately owned institutions where it's not free, different grades/shades of scorlarships are available for as many as interested. Here in nigeria, it's the very opposite. even our public universities that are heavily subsidized is still not affordable to many; at least, you'll know about no less five poor around you who want and wish to be in school be are not because they can't afford it; the story is same all over the country. So, what should be our priorities? where do you think the churches in Nigeria should come in? What challenges should be addressed first by Churches/christians?
Churches in the western world don't need to fight poverty and lack of their members because the government is working well over there and almost everything is provided for so they can afford to spend their money whatever they feel like whether biblical or not(but some of them are using if wisely on foreign missions and evengelism). We're losing priority by copying them here. We have a more serious challenges to deal with here instead of building universities that isn't beneficial to her members. My original argument is not even against the building those higher institutions of learnings but in the way it's not affordable to the Christian majority. so if it cannot be made affordable, it's just not neccessary; it's a misplaced priority.

Are you for real bro.? do your survey very well pls. btw, a lot of example abound of those who finish from public schools and are doing very well spiritually/morally so much so that your argument becomes irrelevant. May I remind you that all these respected men of God finished from these public universities to start with.

finally, the church shouldn't be competing with the government on whose facility is better or who can build the best and most beautiful university; we should be the light in showing the government on how to solve the many challenges in Nigeria such as poverty and unaffordable educational systems.
This is exactly what i have been saying. But then, since theyve built universities, is the regualar church offering donations etc nationwide and even abroad not more than enough to subsidize the few universities to make it affordable for poor members or give high schorlarships?

Level 15? As the son of a retired level 16 in Lagos State, I would tell you for free civil service pay is far from upper middle class (even with staff quarters, and subsidized health-care) - its simple middle class at best, and if you factor in how many decades it takes you to get there, its pure nonsense.

As for average fees being $10,000, if you did your research well, you would find that only community colleges charge that low - they offer at best Associate degrees (equivalent to your OND). A proper university would set you back by at least 2.5 that amount per annum - without living expenses. If $50,000 income is enough for most parents to fund university education, how come so many are forced to co-sign college loans for their wards that many would be unable to pay back for many decades?

As for supporting nonsense, it is you who is not a serious person. Babcock University for instance is owned by the Adventist Church, which operates 100+ universities across the world - not one is free. If I may ask, do you even know how much the government subsidizes each university student's education?

P.S: I'm largely agnostic, so I don't care much for religion, its you who needs to wake up and smell the coffee.
