A COURT in Saudi Arabia has condemned two women to prison and 20 lashes for using expletives in a private Whatsapp conversation.

The pair will serve 10 days in a Saudi prison for the heated exchange in which they reportedly used bad language towards each other.

Judges reportedly slammed the women for "impermissible expressions" after one of them was reported for being "abusive" - with the other woman retaliating by turning her in to the authorities for swearing.

Sunni Kingdom judges warned the pair they would face harsher punishment if they used expletives again, even in private.

The ruling came after Saudi Arabia was recently admitted to the Human Rights Council after human rights groups accused the country of clamping down on freedom of expression and discriminating against woman.

The case comes after the Middle Eastern country threatened to behead a disabled man for taking part in anti-goverment protests.

Munir Adam, who is partially blind and deaf, was sentenced to death for "attacks on police" and other crimes arising from protests in the oppressive state in 2011.

His family claims the 23-year-old steel cable worker was tortured into confession and only signed a document after repeated beatings by officials from the Middle East kingdom.
