Shockingly, however, its status as an agricultural powerhouse has declined. While Nigeria once provided 18 percent of the global production of cocoa, second in the world in the 1960s, that figure is now down to 5 percent. And while the country produces 65 percent of tomatoes in west Africa, it is now the largest importer of tomato paste. That teases our fantasy. The mess keeps getting messier.


Former minister of agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, once reels off these statistics with regret as he was found to have said that “Nigeria is known for nothing else than oil, and it
is so sad, because we never used to have oil – all we used to have was
agriculture,” he says.

Now, I didn't intend to bore you with the above but to remind us of our potentials as nation and citizens. Agriculture is our way so we must go back to the drawing board for I think we have one and if we have not, then its not too late to draw up one.
