The season is here where automobile A/C which used to be an accessory transforms to a necessity. I got thinking of my AC problems and an idea crossed my mind.

Common problems associated with improper cooling is low Freon charge (AC gas) and dirty cabin air filter. Every average AC technician will point to these issues as first point of call. The next point of concern is usually dirt or bad fins on AC condenser and bad cooling fan. Average technicians will ask you to pressure wash the condenser for proper air flow.

It just hit me that there could be more to the list without suggesting expensive part replacement. This particular thought is one i have not heard from most Nigerian AC technicians.

The AC evaporator coil is one important AC component that suffers serious neglect from our AC technicians. Nigerian atmosphere is so polluted that cabin air filters cannot be said to be 100% effective which lets some dust settle on the evaporator coil. Also because of condensation, dust can stick and dry on the evaporator coil causing blockage. Mold growth is another factor which causes foul AC smell. It is worst when some Nigerian AC technicians decide to delete the presence of cabin air filter just like my car. This will send dust directly to the evaporator coil blocking its fins with time.

I bought my car Nigerian used and have been aware that the cabin filter had been removed. I was lazy in buying it and have always left my car on recycle to block off the system from dusty air, its obvious that is far for ideal. I recharged Freon on my car once but i have feeling like my 03 Accord AC could have been better for reasons i dont know. It actually chills very well but after some minutes have gone by unlike my friend's 08 accord which sends chill air from vents seconds after turning on the AC.

My research today has shown that mold formation and dust will actually drop the AC performance and cause foul smell. There are foam aerosol cans specifically for evaporator cleaning. Of course it will be a difficult thing to get in Nigeria. Since the evaporator usually has a condensation pipe, even spraying water on the evaporator will be of help if accessible. However the evaporator fins are very light and delicate so care should be taken on using pressurized water.

I have seen YouTube videos and still studying the possibility of doing this as a DIY project. This is one thing i have in mind that could optimize my AC performance this hot season.

After a review on my car's service manual, having access to the Evaporator involves removal of the blower motor unit and expansion valve cover from under the glove box compartment.

it takes 30mins to bring down the evaporator, and about 45 mins to reinstall it.

It is DIY if you are good with tools.

I really do not want to remove the evaporator since i will have to discharge the gas and recharge the system after the job and also would need to replace the o-rings.

For the love of our environment, since we dont have Freon gas recycling systems in Nigeria, it is unwise to free all that harmful gas just for convenience. I also fear complications, "make i no buy market" or "make yanga wake trouble".

Not in all cases (Only if accessible from glove compartment)
eg.
Peugeot 406 requires whole dashboard off
then another plastic console housing the evaporator ( min 90 minutes job).

30mins to remove evaporator? Only on some cars while on some it would require taking out the whole dash which would take more than 30mins

I didn't go ahead as planned because i think i may have a little leakage. From the picture below, the circle area around the high pressure pipe seem to be wet wit oil signifying a small leak. Because of this, i have to plan to remove the evaporator and replace the seal in the process.

It looks like you are using the wrong vent setting. It is best to select air re-circulation, face vent (shown below) and temperature dial to coolest (counter clock-wise till it stops). This will give you best result and if not good enough, you may need to recharge the system.

Hello please i had my AC Evaporator changed recently due to frequent loss of gas and the technician pressure tested my compressor and pipes before concluding it was my evaporator which had some drops of oil on the body. Ever since the evaporator was replaced, gas refilled my car doesn't chill as before and requires me increasing the fan to 4 to get a good feel. Also dew forms at the bottom of my windscreen despite the face vent and air re-circulation on. Car is a 2005 Lexus RX330.

My ac compressor runs continuously. The Ac specialist says there is no thermostat to regulate the operation. I hope it doesn't spoilt my compressor if i keep running it like that without thermostat? Any views from anybody?

Your Ac specialist is a quack. A damage would be done. You would kip buying serpentine belt as a result of this and also there would be more stress on compressor. By the way what car is this?

the technician did either or both things listed below

1. he didnt vacuum the whole system after installing the new evaporator, thus the refrigrant is compromised..and has mixed with air and water vapour...this will eventually rust tru the evaporator again...and develop a leak

2. he didnt fill the car to factory spec, most cars take btw 500 to 850g of refrigrant, and takes upto 45mins following standard refilling procedure...most mechanics do 10 to 15mins max...there end up putting 100 to 200g only.
they dont wanna buy the right tools/nor try to understand the whole ac principle.......with the present tools they have and mindset...i still would not advice you to insist they do more than 30mins to refill

3. probablly added too much oil o the refrigrant

conclusion: search out a qualified ac technician, or better still study up on ac refill technology, it aint rocket science.
my car ac grief ended , the day i opened my mind and researched...i do all ac work on my car by myself, and have bought almost all the tools required

Car is 2007 Camry ,4cyl . observed it cools at will and sometimes just blow air , an ac tech said the compressor was automatic and observed a leak on an joint where an O ring should be.

His diagnosis and suggestions.
1. Buy a manual compressor
2. Change the condenser ( said the gas in system was dark or burnt )/ I just don't understand.
3. Flush the piping of the system.

All his demand are in range of 70k. In this recession ? told himI was coming grin

Well, I fixed mine yesterday. All they had to do was change a pipe which had a leak (N2500), buy gas and oil (N2500) and then workmanship was N1500. I feel relieved now. Thought it was going to cost a whole lot more.

My Car AC demands recharging every 5-6months. Don't know what actually the problem is? Its been worked on twice, no observed leakages and evaporator replaced yet the AC blows hot after 5-6months of cooling.
