Afrobeat singer, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, has said that it was wrong to call many of the new-school Nigerian pop singers artistes, saying that they were actually entertainers.

Seun was recently a guest on Diddy’s Revolt TV where he said that there was no depth in their music as he compared them with packaged products. “Most people that are called artistes are really just entertainers. There’s no depth to them, people write their songs for them, they are packaged like a product and sold to the mainstream media as art but there is really no depth and when there is no depth, it can’t be art.

“When I sing socially or politically charged songs, it’s not just about making an album, it’s about the responsibility of art to the society. Most people forget that art has a responsibility to the society… but to be honest, most real artistes are not even famous or successful financially or commmercially,” he said.

He also said that it was not correct to call pop singers Afro beat singers or Afro-pop singers as there was no correlation between the two genres. “I don’t think this is Afrobeat, it’s pop music. It is not Afrobeat in any way, shape or form. In terms of composition, in terms of arrangement, in terms of message, it’s pop music but they are afraid to compete with American pop musicians so they are trying to say ‘oh we are different’ so I won’t be surprised if Wizkid is able to make it to Billboard because it is pop music and he could relate.
