market forces at the end of the day determines price of goods and services, if a businessman can't cope with a particular line of business, its better he closes down and gets into another business line and let others who can cope enter or continue that line of business, after all the erisco guy closed down his factory and said he too wants to import instead, abi he no consider the money he too will send abroad for business or clearing fees? How do you justify the astronomical increase in price of goods and services that has nothing to do with dollar rate? Does it make any economic sense? The business model of many of our fellow Nigerians are wrong, we complain, yet the Asians in our country keep thriving even in the midst of recession and creating many business outfits.

How many Asian companies are into manufacturing in Nigeria, all they do is bring in finishes products from their countries and take our money out. The people who are in Nigeria manufacturing and giving services that requires huge capital will tell you that the business environment isn't too bad right now. Ask the airlines, even the banks .

stop the lies, I do attend meetings organised by MAN and I see lots of the asian manufacturers, they are also heavily involved in the agribusiness sector where I work, yes there are challenges but these guys are still thriving especially the ones who are into exports, even the naira devaluation has been to their greatest advantage, the smart Nigerians in these sectors who are exporters have been making the real dough since the naira devaluation. Forget the stories you are hearing even many Nigerian businessmen who earn in dollars through exports are having a swell time in business these days, petrol and diesel to them are cheaper in the dollar equivalent. They join the majority of Nigerians to complain but the truth is they have no qualms. Our media people are too lazy to dig this out.

I know a company who has just opened a huge shrimp farm in badagry btw the badagry creek and the atlantic ocean to export 50 million shrimps annually to europe,[I was there to see for myself] they've been in Nigeria for ages exporting shrimps by fishing in our waters now they have diversified to open a shrimp farm and a Nigerian bank also financed them. How our Nigerian businessmen including the looters don't see or explore such opportunity is a mystery to me.

Any Nigerian businessman who is a manufacturer and an exporter and is complaining about the economy is just being diplomatic to give an impression that he too is suffering but the truth is they are doing well and I know this. Even the asians who are bringing in finished products, have you asked how come they are thriving while their Nigerian counterparts are not. Something is not adding up somewhere bruv.

It is more complicated than that. What new entrant wants to enter Cement business today that Dangote, Ibeto & WAPCO won't stiffle out? Tax incentives cannot even help because these big players can crash prices below cost price and recoup the difference in cross-selling products. New entrants will simply fizzle out

I appreciate the pulse of the end consumers like you and I. I also think we need to spare some thoughts to let the Telecoms industry develop on the long run and be sustainable. For example, CDMA (Multilinks, Starcoms etc) is virtually dead because the big GSM player and Cable coys overrun them. The new entrants that will continue to make the cut will be the global organisations like Visaphone, Virgin Mobile and co. Now this will be value erosion to Nigeria as all the monies will be "exported" to their country of origin, like MTN still does.

We need to spare some tots to allow & encourage coys of Nigerian origin to play in this market. That is how we can grow sustainably

I understand the point you are putting through....and I understand the NCC planned this with us I'm mind. But conditions right now are not the best. They should be able to come up with other incentives for entrants that making the consumers best all the brunt. Or a partial baseline upward review followed with some reliefs for indigenous entrants.

1. NCC has good intentions but did not feel the pulse of the people as such this backlash.
2. Secondly, an option is for government to come in with subsidy in terms of infrastructure investments for the operators, so as to help in cost competition. Government may for example adopt some measures India took as far back as 15/16yrs ago, when they opted to give some citizens (e.g. women of a particular age bracket) subsidised/free internet access, create free wifi spots (Libraries, select stores, bus/trains stops etc)

BUT new entrants must be "helped" to come in and play in that market

1. These are not service providers per say. These are stakeholders in the business
2. The concern is that the number of players in the industry will shrink as new entrants are frozen out. What will happen is that all of us will be restricted to probably 3-4 players. At that rate you have limited options even when they combine to rape us
3. I think in the long run, the government will need to come in and stimulate this industry. The government may need to bring like 6 investors of Nigerian origin an partner with them to float about 3 major Telcoms coy, run it for about 5-7yrs then the govt can exit their investment at a loss. That is an option to help, else someone still has to pay the price

There are no barriers on new entrants as far as I know. When the ground looks good, people will come in. Look at Spectranet before they went rogue, they made a killing merely by introducing a service that was already readiy available at a cheaper price. The problem in Nigeria is that service providers always look to price increments as the primary way of staying afloat, instead of looking for new technology, or merely trimming down the ubiquitous wastage and inefficiency. If a new player that is more pragmatic should come in, they will find a way to provide data rates at better prices. If not, we find solutions. I envisage networks closing down their businesses right after pure-water manufacturers.

Glo, after setting a price, will be like......ya fadas, let's see any of you playing catch up.. grin grin

sorepco:
Most of u commenting dont get it. What i can see is that some of these foreign telcos are at great loss when they try to repatriate their profits due to the bad exchange rate. So they want the NCC to set a benchmark data plan that no telco can go below. I.e. glo or mtn cant go below 1.5 gig @ 2,500 naira!! However they can go above it.
Has anyone heard glo complaining about this? No. They dont need to tepartriate their profits. They can readily reinvest in naira. And dont forget say na glo de scatter data price anyhow.

Yeye! So they are the only ones experiencing economic hardship. Are Nigerians alien to that? They should give us another story. Price no good, price no good. Are they all giving data at same price? Is Airtel now extinct cos they give more data for money than empty hen and other stingy, exploitative telcos? Awon oniranu dede! Little profit no dey do them again, awon radarada gbogbo. Nigerians are no longer interested on grammar. We've had too much of that Oga ANITON abi wetin dem dey call you sef. Stop threatening us with poor service. If your service is poor, we will abandon you so that all of us can now come and sit down. You jobless, I jobless. Ehn, kilo tun ku? abeegi jare.

Who forced these Telcos to slash their data prices in the first place? Did they not keep unveiling new data plans and prices to attract market share? Did anyone force them to give out all the freebies they did? If they felt d prices were unrealistic, healthy business plans would have seen them offer better services for slightly increased prices on their own network, not banding together with the connivance of the NCC to unilaterally increase prices by as much as 200%!

That is bad faith and large scale monopoly which should not be the case. There is supposed to be competitive marketing and prices based on quality of services rendered. How effective have their data services been anyway?
this people are just looking for a way to make squeeze money out of us
