Voter Apathy Mars Rep Bye-election In Lagos by nazzyon(m): 10:30pm On Dec 03, 2016 |
Low turn-out marred the Ifako-Ijaiye federal House of Representatives bye-election on Saturday holding in 687 Polling Units in Lagos State. Meanwhile, movement within the constituency was not restricted as against assurance given by Commissioner of Police, Lagos state command, Fatai Owoseni, that border roads would be blocked to restrict movements. The by-election, organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is taking place following the death of Elijah Adewale, who represented the constituency in the House of Representatives in Abuja on July 20. In most of the polling units visited by our correspondent, it was gathered that sensitive electoral materials arrived early in all polling units. But, despite the early arrival of these materials, the number of eligible voters, who came out for the voting process was very low compared to number of register voters. At about 12 pm, Polling Unit O18 at Sanni Balogun, Ojokoro axis of the constituency, electoral officers were sighted waiting for voters to come forward and carry out their civic responsibility. At this polling Unit with over 1,000 registered voter, it was learned that less than 300 voters have exercise their right. Party agents who spoke to newsmen allegedly blamed the security agencies for the huge apathy that greeted the poll. Peoples Democractic Party (PDP) candidate, Babatope Akinyele, in an interview with newsmen lamented that the number of voters who have exercised their rights was a far cry to the registered voters for the poll. His words, “some of the electorate didn’t come out because they think their votes will not count. And I have assured them that it is their right and they must exercise it.” Speaking to All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Akinwunmi Olaitan, who assured that the apathy would cease, said “we expect an upsurge later in the day because I believe that the voting has just started. I believe that before 2 pm when the voting exercise ends, more people will have come out to exercise their vote.” http://www.theguildng.com/?p=9566 |

After we will blame the government for not performing. How can our public servants work for us when we clearly show no interest about who they are and how they get there. |

If people wanted to vote, Government action was really appalling. People were really upset now. Imagine closing all the roads that link Ifako Ijaiye without informing the populace. People coming from Ikeja, Egbeda, OTA, Akute, ,Berger, Ogba, etc couldn't access Ifako Ijaiye. The whole of Ogba was locked down, Pen Cinema too. Last week I was pitying those that got trapped in Ore not knowing same would happen to me in Ifako Ijaiye. There was no information about the election. 2 Likes |

the people has lost hope in democracy. Power no longer belong to them. A revolution must happen very soon, else we will all be reduced to nothing soon. We must rise against these charlatans. No old man shall be recycled and marketed to we (the major voters) again. We must stop selling our future. The youths must rise and take control. This is the only hope for the dying Nigeria. This is our time |
