How to be employed as a student on Campus

We now live in a society where the labour market is already congested with little or no space for new comers. Each year, Institutions of higher learning always push graduates into the already congested labour market.

As a student, you need not depend on the stipends your parents send you on weekly or monthly basis when you can be gainfully employed, doing your own job and getting some extra cash to keep body and soul together. This is just a fragment of the list of lucrative things you can do as a student of higher institution.

1. Bulk SMS services: As students, there is always a need for the fellowship, department, associations, organisations and even the religious bodies to keep in touch with their members. You can run this business without it even affecting your lecture schedules. All you need for this business is a functional bank account, access to the internet and a good communication skill to convince the customer about your pricing. You can start this business with as low as N2, 000.

2. T-Shirt Customization: Each semester in school, we see how almost every department/organization (religious or social) will love to have a customized t-shirt as a sign of achievement for that year. As a student, you can go into the art of designing the shirts and receive your pay in no time. If you are really good, you will have to be turning down requests because they will be coming in their numbers. Although this business requires a special skill in the sense that the student will have to be good at graphics design to be able to bring out a good design on the T-shirts, but s/he can still make a good cash from this business. The good thing about this business is that you can learn the skill while at home on holidays. This business can be started on a small scale with as low as N5, 000.

3. Catering services: The list will be incomplete without including this vocation. Students are always on the move to celebrate virtually everything (from birthdays, matriculations, end of the semester) in grand styles. These functions are incomplete without a cake and other snacks served as refreshment. As a student, you can offer catering services to your colleagues at a very affordable price and if you are good at it, the pay is good. Although the market for this skill is now overloaded but you can make an impact if you can build your skills. Bear it in mind that starting this business may be quite expensive due to the price of the equipments involved but the pay is good and it is a guaranteed way to attract more cash into your bank account.

4. Sale of fashion items: This is also a good business for students on campus but it is quite very risky. One has to be very careful when engaging in this type of business. Students can sell items such as underwear, clothes, footwear, wristwatches, handbags, earrings and the list is just endless. This business can be set up with as low as N 20, 000 and subsequent expansion can be made later.

5. Tech stuff: Students can engage in the repairs of gadgets such as laptops, handsets etc. Providing tech stuff can also be a good way in getting extra cash on your pockets.

6. Graphic design and photography: As a student, you can be engaged in design of phone stickers, banners, digital passports and photographs. You can also design customized invitation cards for events.

Contrary to public opinion that a student should always be broke, once you can find what is lacking in your hostel, department or even organization, you are sure to succeed.
