Truth234:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has summoned the acting Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, and Bursar, Mrs. Aderonke Akeredolu, over the payment of an ‘unapproved’ hazard allowances to the institution’s workers.

The allowances paid to the academic and non-academic staff, our correspondents gathered, were over N1bn.

It was learnt that the allowances were sourced from the university’s endowment funds account, which is usually dedicated for projects.

But the spokesperson for the university, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, argued that the specific fund used in paying the allowances was not attached to any project in the account.

It was also gathered that certain allowances earmarked for the office of the VC were also being investigated by the federal agency.

The invitation was confirmed in a letter exclusively obtained by our correspondents on Monday.

The letter, signed by Mr. Oseni Kazeem of the Southwest Zonal Office of the commission in Ibadan, Oyo State, advised the invited officers to come along with necessary documents.

The letter reads in part, “The office is currently investigating a case in which there is the need to obtain clarification from you. In view of the foregoing, you and your bursar are requested to report to our office for an interview.

“You are also to come along with the following documents: the salary payment schedule/any other payment made to senior staff and junior staff in August and September, 2016; payment vouchers relating to furniture allowances paid to the VC from the day he assumed office to date; certified true copies of the monthly salary pay slips of the VC from the day he assumed office to date.”

When contacted on the telephone on Monday, Olarewaju said the payment of the allowances should not be tagged as misappropriation.

He said, “The acting VC has been invited by the EFCC to come and make some clarification and as a law abiding citizen, he will attend. Afterwards, we will know what to do.

“The fund used to pay the allowances cannot amount to misappropriation. The said money was not attached to any project or anything. It was just in the account. And, of course, when the life of a member of the staff of the university was threatened by those who are agitating for the payment, the acting VC had to save the situation by paying the allowances to douse the tension.

“You will agree with me that, since then, there have been peace on campus. It was not that the money was in that account for a particular project and was diverted. The issue of misappropriation does not arise here.”

One of our correspondents learnt that upon resumption of office, the acting VC paid hazard allowances to the workers after continuous protest and unrest in the university.

It would be recalled that the hazard allowances were a major reason why members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities at the institution protested against the former administration headed by Prof. Bamitale Omole.

Black man can not organise successful society. I'm not surprised. It is absolutely possible that their defence has a lot of merit: once Naija man hear there's any money somewhere, he starts to fight for his right to collect it to further his stupid life. That's exactly what happened with state governments and FG regarding sovereign wealth fund and external reserves. They always believe that protests, force and violence can get you what you want right now. Who can blame them? It has worked with ND militants. Nigeria is a joke!

This govt and EfCc has no agenda . They are just out to make sensational news and give wrong impression of people they are not at peace with.
It is obvious EFCC is a tool of Buhari against perceived enemies .
Quite pathetic

Corruption has become the norm in naija.

Corrupt people don't even see themselves as corrupt.

If you are not corrupt, then something is seriously wrong with you.

That is called university autonomy.

The VC utilized available money to calm down minds. He didnt steal the money, call it diversion if you want but from what I am reading here it was diverted to a more pressing issue which involved everyone

You can sugar coat it, however you please. It is still illegal.

Omole and his cabal should leave us alone already. Before he left, he was owing them about 55 months' allowances, Elujoba came and paid, now you saying he picked the money from a wrong account, what else do you want to construct, at least, the man is trying, we now use shower heads in the morning. I don't know why the EFCC isn't aware Omole tried to steal #30 million as severance package

Don't mind them; the former VC that embezzled the university's money weren't investigated it is the one that came to pay the staffers what is due to them that EFCC is raising an eyebrow about. Useless investigations here and there. Making noise where the need does not arise at all.

Like many VCs have looted the money of many universities as those who appointed them there looted all Nigerians wealth. Other tertiary schools didn't escape the looting whirlwind, looting everywhere

I read the comments of most people on this thread, I must say, My heart bleeds. Very few people could comprehend what the op has posted. So a VC paid entitlements to staff now, its a problem, if he had left in the bank to waste away while workers lie in anguish, you people will not complain o. Shame on you guys, your shallow way of reasoning really disgusts me.

Most people here don't know what is really happening, omole was owing over 64 months hazard allowance before leaving office in June. Hazard allowance is an approved allowance agreed upon by the unions and fg in 2009 however, due to paucity of funds from fg each university paid this allowance from its igr periodically something the former Vc refused to do all these months.
The acting Vc came on board an paid 10 months in August to reduce the tension on campus. There are still a lot of debts the university is owing it's workers which I don't want to go into now.
Re: N1bn Allowance: EFCC Summons OAU VC, Bursar by castro(m): 7:48pm On Dec 13, 2016
The facy is that in the agreement with FG, provisions were made for effecting such payments as approved by the university councils. However it is ONLY NAAT members that are entitled to 30000 monthly of which there is a circular from the FG in 201c that it should not be part of earned allowances but made part of salaries with immediate effect. NASU and SSANU who work in labs, workshops or studios are d only other members entitled to 15k per month but to be negotiated as earned allowances unlike that of NAAT. However when the first tranch of payments were paid to universities. Schools like FUNAAB paid all senior staff 30k n 15k for juniors staff ofcourse this was made possible by d crooked moves by SSANU members who also make up the accountants handling payments. D result is that even lecturers were paid hazard allowance which was outside dia agreement.
