haywire07: Just as I had feared, you've turned the discussion to Biafra. I wanted you to explain to me, without mentioning anything about Biafra or any other potential independent state, why remaining in a united Nigeria is the best thing for the Igbos. How exactly does it benefit us? Every time I ask people this question, they always resort to implying that Nigeria is the lesser of two evils and that any independent state will fail because of so and so reasons. One should never have to stay in a country just because they're afraid that they'll fail should they choose to do any different. As for your last point, well, what can I say? Have you read any Nigerian news in the past 50+ years? Many Igbos have died just for being Igbos, especially in the North. |

Ngozi123: Since you are against a United Nigeria, may I know the reason why you believe the Igbos should seceede? Many Igbos have died just for being Igbos, especially in the North. Please I need a proof of the emboldened culled from a credible source or I'll only have to believe that you want me to believe anything even if its false so I can agree with your point of view. PS: I made lots of typographical errors in my last comment, my phone was freezing and I had just 1% battery to type and post, but I hope my point was well related. 1 Like |

haywire07: Can't really be bothered to look for sources right now but the various pogroms during and before 1966, including the 1953 Kano riots. The 2010 Jos riots, yes I know that Christians were targeted but most Northerners see an Igbo person and automatically tag that person as a Christian. Also, the riots that took place after the implementation of Sharia Law in the North; again, Christians were targeted but we all know that Igbos are synonymous with Christians in parts of the North. These are just the main ones. Many Igbos have been murdered in cold blood in various parts of the country e.g. Kano state 2012, were four Igbos were killed mercilessly by some locals. 1 Like |

The Igbos have no history of existing at a nation state level.Developmentally they never evolved beyond the village state level of political organization . Having such a chaotic mix as neighbours will be a serious security threat to any serious nation and so they cannot be left to their own unruly and primordial devices they will always need containment 1 Like 1 Share |

Ngozi123: If u were to talk about 1966, even a secondary school student should know that Igbos threw the first punch, but that's a story for another day because I won't want you to get flopped easily. And when has the killing of Christians turned to killing of Igbos? It will be pathetically bias if you decide to turn a religious war to a tribal war just to justify an invalid point. Do you know how many westerners lost their lives? do u want to compare the number of Igbos in the north to the number of Yorubas?. Check your stats well and you will know that a larger percentage of Igbos would never return to the north since the civil war. 1 Like |

haywire07: Lmao, 'flopped' by whom? What exactly did they do, in your opinion, to deserve to be brutally murdered en masse? What did those who were slaughtered actually do to their murderers? I already said that the Jos and Sharia riots were targeted at Christians in general, however, you and I both know that Igbos are synonymous with Christianity in most Northerners' eyes. Stop trying to be pedantic here, most Nigerians know this. Btw, I know that other southerners were murdered in some of them riots as well but the majority of the victims were Igbos. Btw, many Igbos refused to return back to the North but many chose otherwise. There's still a very healthy population of Igbos living in the North today, although more have left due to Boko Haram- are you going to deny this? |

Ngozi123: Somehow, I just feel this should end. Your points are getting myopic. When someone kills the other for being a christian and you say its because he is Igbo, that's undisputably myopic and selfish. Its surprising for someone to conclude that Igbos have a larger population than yorubas in the north . Please which of the states are closer to the north if I may ask? You said what did they do to deserve the killing? OK, what level of rage would you feel if someone takes away the most important people in your life? (God forbid) I guess you haven't studied what led to the civil war . 1 Like |

haywire07: Definition of 'myopic': 1) short-sighted. 2) lacking foresight or intellectual insight. Au contraire, I absolutely understand the difference between 'Igbo' and 'Christian', which I alluded to in my previous posts. However, that does not in any negate the fact that many in Nigeria, particularly the North, do not fully distinguish Igboness from Christianity. Notice I said that Igbos are synonymous with Christianity, not Christianity is synonymous with the Igbos; the syntax is very important here. You seem to be the one lacking insight here; you can't just look at something on the surface and believe that you have a full understanding of it. Btw, in my posts, I have not mentioned anywhere that people from other ethnic groups have not been killed in the North but it's clear that the Igbos are the most 'obvious' target due to their association with Christianity. To suggest otherwise is rather mischievous imo. Its surprising for someone to conclude that Igbos have a larger population than yorubas in the north . Excluding Kwara state (and maybe Kogi state too, although I'm not sure if they have indigenous Yorubas or not), it would not be surprising for someone to say that at all, even taking into account the Igbos who've left the North-East recently. Anyway, why are you bringing up Yorubas here? What have they got to do with Igbos being killed in the North? You said what did they do to deserve the killing? OK, what level of rage would you feel if someone takes away the most important people in your life? (God forbid) SMH, I have to say that I'm truly disappointed in you. I actually gave you an opportunity to retract that statement, instead, you've used it to justify yourself even more. What a shame! How can someone who claims to be a progressive say that those people who were slaughtered deserved to be murdered because a few politicians were killed by a bunch of soldiers? Yes, I have studied the civil war, in depth too, and that is why I can confidently say that your justification is absolute hogwash. They did nothing to deserve what happened to them and the fact that you think they did shows just how messed up a country Nigeria is today. Don't complain when you see innocent Christians being slaughtered in the North due to happenings outside of their control as that pogrom was the prototypical event that allowed many in the North to understand that they could get away with anything as long as the victims did not share the North's ethno-religious background. You claim to have studied the civil war yet you cannot seem to see how history in repeating itself? What a shame! @GreenCap What do you think of this post and the one I'm replying to? I'd really like to get into the mind of a nationalist Nigerian. 1 Like |
