No Plastic Rice In Nigeria – Health Minister, Debunks Claims By Nigerian Customs by OKDnigeria: 12:32am On Dec 23, 2016 |
Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole has faulted the report that plastic rice has flooded the Nigerian market. According to the minister, there was no evidence to back those claims. Few days back, the Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, of the Nigeria Customs Service announced that it had intercepted 102 bags of plastic rice branded “Beat Tomato Rice’’ with no date of manufacture. According to the Customs Area Controller of F.O.U. Comptroller Mohammed Haruna, the commodity was stored for distribution as Yuletide gifts for the public. Haruna said that officers of the unit intercepted the plastic rice along Ikeja area on Monday, adding that a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure. “Before now, I thought it was a rumour that the plastic rice is all over the country but with this seizure, I have been totally convinced that such rice exists”, he added. Reacting, however, the health minister claimed that the director general of the National Agency for Foods Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, had briefed him that the report was a hoax. “I have just been briefed by DG@NafdacAgency on Plastic Rice reports. Preliminary test results reveal there is no evidence backing claims,” he twitted Thursday.
