According to some media reports, building collapse is fairly common in Nigeria. When you look at it actually, you dont see a very high percentage of houses built going down. Never the less, every case of a collapsed building can be traumatic to the victims and the people that erected the structure in the first place.
The very first step in ensuring a building does not collapse is in the structural details of the building. In other words, the success of a building starts from a very sound structural detail. And actually we have very good structural designs out there. From university students to seasoned professionals, a lot of good designs are out in the public space for us to work with.
The major problem seemed to be in the compliance to the set standards that were used in the design. More often than not, you see Engineers using steel reinforcements lower than that specified in the structural details. While this is of very great concern, there are also cases where Engineers want to use the specified steel reinforcement in terms of thickness and tensile strength. While the thickness can be easily ascertained, the same cannot be said of the tensile strength and our regulatory bodies that are supposed to ensure that the right steel fixtures are what is available in the markets do not function properly. So one might be paying for a high grade of reinforcement to use and beat his chest that he is using the right quality, but that may be wrong!
And the second thing after reinforcement is the CONCRETE. This is also specified in the structural designs of buildings, and can be a problem too if the specification is not adhered to. And this can really cause problems for the embedded steel reinforcement. Now this is where I can help you. Civil Engineers have a good knowledge of concrete, but there are lots of minute details that a lot of them miss in the actual concrete job. It is not new that Nigerians do not patronize specialists when they can get one person (in this case a civil engr.) to be able to do everything!. But I tell you, you dont want your structure to collapse when a little extra help was all you needed.
