This is the astounding tale of the severely wounded dog who successfully regrew his entire face after he was found being eaten alive by maggots.

The canine, who has since been named Kalu, was discovered by Animal Aid Unlimited charity workers resting inside a hole at a construction site in India.

His face, which was horrendously deformed and infested with fly larvae, had been entirely eaten away and the wound exposed a large section of his skull.

The charity workers said that the dog, who was presumably in unbearable pain, had crawled into the hole in order to die.

Determined to put the dog out of his misery one way or another, the workers took Kalu back to the animal shelter in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
They assessed the dog and contemplated euthanasia after staff noted that the wound was one of the worst they had ever encountered.

But something about Kula - his immense spirit - resulted in the charity workers giving the dog a chance of survival.
They got to work removing the maggot infestation with a special powder before putting him under sedation in order to clean the wound.

The dog was then bandaged up and left to recover - he managed to eat food on the third day before something even more remarkable occurred and his left eye reappeared on the fifth.

As more time passed the wound started to heal and later hair began to grow on the dog's once destroyed muzzle.

Captured on camera three months after being brought to the animal shelter, Kalu was filmed enjoying a new lease of life.

Animal Aid Unlimited is a rescue centre, hospital and sanctuary for stray animals found on the streets of Udaipur.

The centre acts as home to more than 4,500 rescued and recovered animals every year.
