With technology playing an increasingly important role in the daily lives of people, it is perhaps unsurprising that it has its advantages. It was acknowledged by officials of the most popular sports worldwide. The introduction of such methods has occurred within some of the most well-known sports for a whole host of reasons; Including ensuring that a referee does not open themselves up to criticism by getting a crucial decision wrong, or heightening the enjoyment and experience of spectators, something that has become all the more important to sporting associations due to the fact that sport is now more global than ever.

One very important use of technology in sport, is to help match officials. In this age of many sports, technology is used to help match officials make crucial decisions that could change the outcome of the games. Examples of technologies used are, video recording systems and wireless communication technology with other officials. Aids like these give the match officials victory against those tough decisions, thus reducing the number of errors. This guarantees perfection on the part of the match officials that influence the outcome of the matches.

For instance, the Premier League, which is the world most watched sporting event, currently airing on 212 territories, with a general global television audience of 4.7 billion. Such a large number of viewers means there are more money on the sport than ever, with TV companies offering huge payoff in terms of broadcasting rights. And when money is so important, staying in Premier League becomes even more important, this places enormous pressure on referees to make the right decision.

Goal Line Technology

This system is currently used in the Premier League. It is very similar to the system used in other sports, like tennis and cricket. Using a total of seven cameras to build an accurate picture of the square, from which you can detect instantly if the ball has crossed the line.

The decision is then sent to the referee by a particular device worn on the wrist like a watch. The fact that this decision is correct to the nearest 3 cm, and the referee is transmitted almost instantaneously, means that managers are now much more likely to have a a greater amount of respect for the man in the middle. Reading system of video aids like these, give the match officials victory against those tough decisions thus reducing the number of errors. This guarantees least incorrect decisions on the part of match officials that determine the outcome of the matches.

Video replay systems

Video playback systems are used in a wide variety of sports such as tennis, cricket, rugby, baseball and basketball. The use of the technology varies from one sport to another, in basketball playback technology is used to determine if a shot was before the final buzzer, and in Baseball video replays address boundary calls. Video playbacks are used to determine whether an opportunity should be given in rugby and if a ball fell inside or outside the court in lawn tennis.

There are lot of mixed feelings with respect to the video playback technology, people think that the flow of part are interrupted away from the action.

Wireless communication technology

Communication technology is used by match officials to get more information to make a decision. The main match official can seek the advice of his assistants if they have a good view of an incident themselves and therefore, make an informed decision.

Communication technology is not as effective as replay technology as it is open to Human fluff but it still has a significant impact on the results of matches and without it the number of errors made by match officials would rise dramatically.

The rise of technology has not only affected the way the sport itself works in, but also how it is valued. Gone are the days when you could go through a Saturday afternoon without knowing the final score of your favorite team. As well as the progress of digital television, which now allows fans to see more games at their own convenience. The rise of ‘smart phones’ and tablet devices means fans can stay in touch with the actions, no matter where they are, whether through the use of mobile Internet or through a variety of mobile applications that allow users to access information and statistics in real time with the touch of a button. Or the increased use of mobile TV, which has made it easier to stay in touch with what is happening.

Many of the major broadcasters in the UK have taken advantage of the growing use of tablet devices to release applications that allow users to view live high quality TV no matter where they are. The introduction of 4G into the market means the level of demand for these services may increase and more people are attracted by the increase in connection speeds that makes it easier to enjoy mobile content. All that remains is to see how much progress technology will persistently contribute to our enjoyment of sport.
