A statement by Goodluck Jonathan's media adviser yesterday claimed as 'hearsay' the AFP report which revealed that the ex-president was named in an Italian bribery probe. This afternoon, AFP journalist Stephanie Findlay has set the record straight saying the report is based on Italian court documents, and not 'hearsay'.



In a series of tweets, Findlay said, " Yesterday, @GEJonathan's spokesman released a statement on an Italian investigation into the $1.3 billion Malabu oil deal. His spokesman said reports on the case were based on "innuendo." That isn't true, the story is based on Italian prosecution court docs. "The @AFP never said @GEJonathan has been "accused, indicted or charged" in connection w/the deal, it said he has been named in the probe. Italian prosecutors said ENI executives met w/Jonathan "in person" to finalise the deal, there was no suggestion he met anyone privately.


"Jonathan's spokesman said "Abubakar Aliyu" was "never sent" to "collect any gratification" but Italian prosecutors say otherwise. Italian prosecutors said in court documents that Aliyu was working as an "agent" for Jonathan. Italian prosecutors said Aliyu converted $466 million transferred to the Nigerian Malabu accounts into cash for Jonathan & Alison-Madueke.
