Approximately 10% of all containerized goods are discarded by moisture related damages; this is an incredibly large amount that goes to waste not only causing large economic losses, but also affecting our nature.
Container rain is caused by changes in temperature which occur when vessels pass different climate zones for example, a container that is loaded in a tropical environment where the air is warm and humid like Nigeria and then shipped to Norway where temperatures are far cooler, will most likely suffers cargo damage caused by container rain if the container is not protected against moisture.
Never forget that rise and fall of temperature during the sea transport affect the goods you are exporting. Most of the times, the goods absorbs this water that forms due to condensation and spontaneously increase the moisture content of the goods causing mold, or fungi growth in most cases. In the case of charcoal, the humidity increase causing the charcoal to be wet and this might affect your quality parameters at the port of destination. Depending on the goods you are exporting out of the country maybe, Grains, oil seeds, bean seed, charcoal and finished product. This entire commodity requires some certain degree or quantity of dressing materials to keep it safe during the period of sea transportation.
Most times, the container’s temperature could rise up to 80 Degree Celsius during this time, the warm, humid air condenses just like dew running on a can of soft drinks in winter. Condensation begins to form on the cargo, the inner ceiling and the wall of the containers. Condensation takes place on the coldest available surface and cooling cycles in the container, the moisture released could be so significant that it would seems to be raining from the ceiling. This happen repeatedly every 24hrs unless the relative humidity is reduced.
Mostly, shipping lines options this, and the charge depends. It ranges between 180-250USD per container (40ft). Apart from the shipping line providing this service, you can do it yourself by buying the condensates bags and fix according to instructions. It’s cheaper and faster in case you are doing dry seaport loading.
Wet cargo causes the commodity to smell of mold and mildew and possibly allow the growth of fungi which might damage shipment most especially agricultural commodities when shipping containers over sea, take into account; both the materials of your goods and the materials of the packaging to reduce excessiveness of container rains.
This material (Condensate bag) or desiccant bag is something you must have seen in the past. The basic example is the little bag of sand- like particles you find inside shoe box. But in the case of container usage, it’s much bigger and capable of removing moisture better when put inside a container.
The material composition is Calcium Chloride.

Fixing it is simple and required no advance course. It comes with hanger that enables you to fix it properly and it last for period of 2-3 months before losing potency. Largely, the longer it takes also depends on the quality of the materials used for the production of the desiccant bags. Buying best quality desiccant bags matters.
Hints* Check for the best quality desiccant bags to use and you can follow a friend recommendation to get the best for your product.
Using of dressing materials does not cost so much and you can add it to your cost price while negotiating price with your buyers. Let’s say 7-9USD increase on every tonnage (25Tons) load inside 40ft container. It’s better, safer and much more required by experience buyers.
