Is Odometer Rollback A Possibility? by thewarlord: 2:03pm On Nov 25, 2009
my pal recently bought a 2001 baby boy, nigerian used.i was already drooling abot the car when something caught my eye.the odometer reading was a very low 45003 miles!when i enquired about that, the dealer(middleman)claimed the previous owner rarely used the vehicle.
what i want to know from my knowledgeable nairalanders is 1.Can a car, manufactured in 2000,bought into nigeria as tokunbo, sold at least twice and still have 45003 as the odometer reading?2.can the odometer be rolled back as it were,

hope to have my questions answered,

It is either rolled back, or the odometer is reading backward since it has been imported into Nigeria.

Actually it is possible to have genuine low mileage on a car. It depends on how much the car is driven, what its used for, if its a second car etc.

I have only done 45,000 miles on my 2002 BMW, which I've owned from nearly new. I beleive average mileage is about 12 K a year.

I'm reluctantly putting it up for sale soon so whoever buys it is going to get a bargain.

You are in UK and according to the poster, the ride has been sold twice in Nigeria . . . .

It is possible to have low mileage on an early car.

It is at least 50% lower than an average 8-year-old car, but unless you know for sure, the mileage has been altered, then it's prudent to let things lie, rather than castigate a seller,

Besides, if your "friend" feels the mileage is not in keeping with the rest of the car, then why isn't he the one complaining here?

Yes Femi but if it is a 3rd or 4th car in the household then it won't get much use will it?

It could have well been madams car and she only goes to the shop and back etc

Like someone also mentioned, it could have been an accident write off and has ben sitting in a garage for many months while the insurance companies were arguing amongst themselves wink

Lol.

Post the VIN, let's see what the mileage was when it was imported into Nigeria.

Odometer rollback may not be a big deal in Nigeria, but in the US it can land you in prison. Before you sell a car to somebody, you have to actually swear that the odometer reading is accurate.

Post the VIN and it will be checked for you.

hi, you should take into cognisance that if your baby boy is american spec like mine, the odometer comes in miles not kilometres, you may have to convert the mileage to kilometre
