The African Union Mission in Somalia Police Commissioner, Brig. Anand Pillay says the rebuilding of the Somali Police Force (SPF), remains a critical national security objective in its goal of institution building in the horn of Africa nation.

Speaking at the conclusion of an induction course for newly deployed Nigerian Police Officers on FrIday, Brig. Pillay asked them to support the rebuilding of Somalia’s police force.

“We all know that there is still a threat to security in this country and it’s our responsibility to support the Somali security institutions in building the security apparatus to take care of the country’s security,” Pillay said.

The police inductees will be the sixth contingent from Nigeria to serve the Mission. They replace a similar contingent, which left Somalia earlier this month, on completion a of year’s tour of duty.

The mandatory induction prepares police officers to better understand the Mission’s mandate and how it relates to their daily tasks in Somalia.

The unit will support Individual Police Officers (IPOs) in executing their duties, mentoring and carrying out joint policing with their counterparts of the Somali Police Force (SPF).

Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Aryee, who is the AMISOM Police Training Coordinator, urged the newly deployed officers to execute their duties diligently.

“You are supposed to provide the necessary support to the Somali Police Force so that by the time we start drawing down, the Somali Police Force will be capable of taking over the internal security responsibilities of Somalia and deliver policing services that will meet internationally acceptable standards of democratic policing,” Aryee stated.

The Nigerian Army says it plans to site a military establishment in Southern Kaduna for quick response as part of the measures aimed at restoring law and order in the area.
The Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Sani Usman said this, noting that the Army is working with other security agencies as well as the civilian population to restore peace and promote tolerance in the area.

“I want to inform you that the Nigerian Army is fully deployed in the southern part of Kaduna state, and just yesterday we further reinforced that.

“And we have gone beyond that; we have also embarked on civil military activities and we are working hand-in-gloves, with other security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services and other military, paramilitary agencies deployed, as well as community and traditional and religious leaders.

“Be assured that the Nigerian Army is fully on ground in the southern oart of Kaduna state.”

He said that with the siting of a military establishment, the Army would be better equipped to avert any form of bloodshed in the area.

For all of the terrible things done by our Police, it is interesting to know that the force is still regarded as the "best in the world" in terms of peacekeeping operations.

I remember Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, The former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, in 2014 commending the police for its professional conduct abroad, he however lamented that certain conditions had hindered same performance at home.

"Incidentally, our people seem to be doing much better abroad than at home. I recalled that the Nigeria Police are the best in the world; I saw them in Angola, I saw them in Rwanda.Then what is happening? How come we are so wonderful abroad and so terrible at home?" he asked.

So I wish them the best in Somalia. I hope they avoid extrajudicial killings.

the structure at home is nothing but a quagmire, that's why they are not performing well at home. When a good structure is put in place and they get well paid instead these thieves politicians, they will perform wonderfully well. The problem of Nigeria is the politicians that receive fat salaries and do nothing while people that risk their lives daily receive peanuts as salaries, even God is not happy with the system
