DEATH AT SEA

                             LEAD-IN

The storms of life- poverty, war, corruption, Hunger, diseases,  crime, death e.t.c  are the banes of human existence as we know it.
It is estimated that annually, more than 2000 illegal black African immigrants ; especially from sub-sahara africa loose their lives at the meditterean in a frantic attempt to enter El dorado (Europe) ; to find better living conditions.

It is a known fact that most deaths at sea are usually cases of boarded vessels capsizing resulting to the drowning of vessel crew members; but there is one underlying cause of death that has being eluding  news reporters for only GOD knows how long. This underlying cause has gone unreported and unpublished because there had not being any survivors to tell their stories.
The story you are about to read reveals what this inevitable cause is- A very chilling one. Enjoy the perusal.

DISCLAIMER : The dramatis personae involved in this story is generally fictitious; the story line is also not an imitation of a real life case study. This story is purely a non-fiction work aimed at offering  reading pleasure to readers.

EPISODE ONE

It was 1:30 in a hot afternoon, and the sun callously scorched the skins of all 10 soon to become illegal immigrants onboard a small vessel- 8 men and 2 women including vessel captain, and all are of sub-sahara African  extract. They were cruising on board a small speed boat which has just departed the shore of Algeria and by the account of time has  sailed only for about 5 minutes in a journey anticipated  to take 30 minutes. As the boat gradually drifted farther away from the shore every visible land mass faded into oblivion, leaving an extensive space of blue liquid called the sea body. For all the 10 migrants with the exception of the vessel captain, this was their first time of witnessing such an overwhelming view of an enormous water body and as such were all stricken by fear, uncertainty and nervousness.
10 minutes into the journey and every thing seemed obviously normal- the tides were friendly  and calm, the moist breeze generated by the fast motion of the speed boat had a suiting and cooling sensation on their skins which kind of made up for the intense heat exerted by the scorching sun. The ambience surrounding the vessel moved from an intense anxiety to a gradual easiness on the part of the first time sailors owing to the vessel operator's incessant  positive attitude of pacifying everyone's mood on board by way of telling stories of the goodies that the supposed El dorado had in store for the immigrants and as he fires down his tales, the faces of the visibly less uneasy Migrants started to beam with smiles and hope .
15 minutes to destination and all seemed well to everyone on board but things were about to get real ugly suddenly.

EPISODE 2

15 minutes to destination and all seemed well to everyone on board but things were about to get real ugly suddenly. By now the speed vessel was visibly going to collide with a wall of approaching chilling wave that abruptly surfaced without any prior sign of build up. The sighting the terror ahead, vessel crew were all petrified of their possible fate in the aftermath of the imminent collision- everyone on board became religious; conflicting religion  praying patterns filled the air; Allah hu..(Muslims) , in the name of Jesus christ...(Christians). It turns out that 7 of the immigrants are Christians while 3 are Muslims ; but the captain of the vessel kept mute the whole time the prayer warriors were speaking to their deities, lol.

Hang on everyone! Here is where pressure liquid meets the meat!- the captain interrupted  loudly and emotionally as the vessel inevitable was about to go head on with a wall of frightening wave. By this time frenzy shouts of the immigrants billowed into the deaf ears of the atmosphere.

EPISODE 3
slaaaaah, wuuhhhh, shussssssh( the crashing sound of the wicked wave on the vessel and her helpless crew members) went.

It was the most terrying near death experience any human can witness. The less than 3 seconds of wave beat up shook the vessel violently and left the crew members all shouting out of great anxiety as if  death cared to listen, lol. The cold fingers of death was felt on their jerking wet bodies. Even the die hard and intrepid captain was shouting like a hopeless lunatic, lol.
What is now known as the first wave impact is happened in a frightening flash speed. The immigrants at this point were still dis-oriented; the captain was very much in control of the vessel 's balance , though visibly frightened; his efforts to keep the vessel afloat paid off in the aftermath of the first wave impact.

Is everyone ok! Is anyone missing!- the captain exclaimed as he turned  back to behold the mute and unresponsive immigrants. He knew the faces and number of the people he had on board, somehow at this point something didn't add up.

Oh my GOD, someone is gone with the waves!- the captained exclaimed; at this point there seemed to be a general momentary conscious awakening of the immigrants, as they realised themselves and also discovered that one of them went with waves. The missing man was a stranger to everyone- no one knows his name and nationality owing to the fact that ab initio no formal introduction was observed among the vessel crew. It was a sad moment for those on board who survived the first wave impact.

EPISODE 4

At this point in time the ambience surrounding the vessel was characterised by fear and sadness. Deep down the hearts of everyone a thought of " it would have being better not to have embarked on this journey " was running. The captain is never experienced  such pattern of turbulent wave in his entire profession span as a sailor. He suspected that there could be more to the origin of the unusual wave.

By now everyone was tensed up as the water ripples were seemingly very excited, indicating a rough path ahead. The intrepid captain  boosted his vessel's  engine capacity  as to gain more speed and  cover more knots- A strategy he improvised in an attempt to escape any sudden repeat of the last incident, he hoped that the boat speeding faster  is going to get them safely to the nearest shore, but this will never happen.

Wait! Wait! Wait a minute, where are we! The captain rhetorically asked as the crew members stared at him in confusion.
I am not familiar with this scene! The captain said again. This time around the crew members chorusly retorted to the captain saying "what do you mean, you are not familiar with the scene".
-The scene was a turbulent  ripples beating the body of the vessel from all direction and what seemed like multiple forceful water vents kept being fired into the atmosphere , some 20 metres away from the high speeding vessel.
Inside the captain's heart this could only mean one thing- it was early June ; a time killer whales gather up within a large perimeter of the mediterrean to mate but what the captain didn't understand was how he bumped in that region with his pathetic crew of illegal immigrants - that first wave impact must have forced the vessel to drift far off the original course, the captain thought to himself.

not at all. Moby dick was an elusive but hunted white whale. This tale isn't about an elusive whale hunt- it's a tale of its kind. Just keep your eyes and mind open as the next episode drops shortly.

EPISODE 5 (everyone dies?)

While the captain was lost in the thought of ' why he bumped into a region infested by hungry and Hot killer whales' ; something happened that made him readjust his focus on the unpleasant reality- A deafening anxious scream by the illegal immigrants on sighting what laid ahead ( the multiple visible water vent into the atmosphere from the killer whales nostrils), they  knew that not even more prayers will save them; so they didn't bother to pray anymore lol . They were all at the mercy of this unforgiving part of the mediterrean sea.

The captain quickly killed the engine of the vessel, so as to stop the vessel from moving any further and also to avoid ramming into the creatures that laid ahead. On a second thought the captain decided to turn the boat around back to the initial course but before he could restart the engine of the vessel he was interrupted by a loud exclamation by one of the immigrants- captain! captain! Look over there!

The captain turned to the rear direction where the immigrant was pointing to and what he saw was not good at all- there was a visible gradual surfacing of black bodies of killer whales  breathing out water vent into the air. Captain look! Captain look!- one lady immigrant cried out yet again as she pointed to the not so distant surrounding water. The captain looked around and behold the vessel was surrounded by killer whales surfacing, Going underwater and re-surfacing again, while the visible sound of the water vent from their nostrils billowed into the air.

Sequel to episode 5....

At this point in time it was all clear-the precarious situation the vessel crew  found themselves in, with no hope of ever getting out alive. The vessel was now surrounded by a great number of killer whales maintaining some good enough metre distance away from the vessel, the whales  occasionally went underwater and kept resurfacing at short intervals  but were never out or sight the whole time. It seemed the whales were enjoying  the intimidating and fear gripped  atmosphere they have generated against this helpless humans.
the captain and the remaining 9 immigrants were held fear bound starring at the overwhelming drama unfolding around them, unable to speak and consciously move at will. "Let's keep it quiet to avoid drawing more attention to ourselves than we can bear from this killers " - the captain whispered to his crew members; while they responded by nodding their heads in unison.
The water current generated by the frequent circling of the whales round the vessel was not dangerously turbulent but it sure was influential enough to rock the vessel a little.
A cross over trip that was meant to last only 30 minutes has now ran into well over 60 minutes and counting, the time was now 3:25pm and counting. The time factor was inconsequential to everyone one board, what was important to everyone was to survive the situation at hand and perhaps hopefully live to tell the tale someday- was this to be?
the circling of the whales  round the vessel continued for the next 45 minutes, shortly after the whales seemingly were no more on sight, I had appeared as if they all went underwater and parted ways with the humans. The captain and his crew members on observing the situation waited for another 5 minutes. After 5 minutes there was still no sign of the whales ; at this point everyone on board though it was the right time to make a u- turn back to the initial course.
The captain quickly started the vessel's engine but as he was about to thrust the vessel and gain speed in an attempt to make a u-turn..... gboooooooof!! .... the vessel flung upwards off the water surface some 3 feet high into the air.....
