KILL “THE TERRORIST HERDSMAN” OR “THE FULANI HERDSMAN”?
According to Merriam-Webster, the word Herdsman is defined as a breeder of livestock,
Here in my country what comes to your mind when you hear the word herdsman is the picture of a Fulani Man standing behind or beside a large number of cattle with a long and thick wooden cane in his hand, a woven hat hanged on his back or probably on his head when there is intense sunshine.
This days the intense situation cause by the experience being left behind after a set of herdsman passes through a community has made Nigerians to take a step further in defining who a herdsman is, herdsman as a word in Nigeria is now being defined as a Fulani man who watches over his cattle with the use of an Ak-47 Rifle, furthermore, the herdsman is a terrorist who covers up his acts by posing as a cattle breeder, the presence of an herdsman in any community either makes you to flee or probably be extra vigilant if you’re very brave.
It’s now very difficult to tag the herdsman with the good man identity he has always had, the man who majors solely in cattle breeding in order to put beef in our pot of soups, he does nothing else, the wife does not even engage in anything different from his profession rather than process the milk extracts of the female cow into a very nutritious drink and cheese, she would trek miles from their settlement back into the city and sell the nutritious content to the city dwellers, the lifestyle of the herdsman used to look like that of a man who renders a selfless service to his community and contented with it.
It’s so disheartening this days that our views have been divided through politics and religion, our comprehension now dangles amidst imbalanced thoughts, we do not even know if the herdsman is really the terrorist who serves horror dishes to innocent and unharmed communities or if the terrorist only poses as an herdsman, or if both exist independently but with mutual interest in cattle rearing.
The calamitous intrusion of the said Fulani Herdsmen has gotten to an height which has religiously drawn battle lines coupled with the slippery hands which the Apc led government decided to wade into the issue, for numbers of the Fulani herdsmen incident that has been recorded since the Apc led government has taken charge of the country only the Ekiti state Governor has been applauded for the mannerism he used in attending to the matter, the Governor adamantly rose to the defense of his people by declaring war on the herdsmen who terrorised the ekiti community, he said his administration will not accepts some boko haram terrorist posing as herdsmen to inflict pains and agony on the people of Ekiti state, he even went as far as equipping the local hunters with necessary equipment which will enable them to ensure a good security. When the southern Kaduna killings erupted, such move was expected from the governor but Governor Elrufai chose to wait on the federal Government who was probably busy attending to other pressing issues at hand like ensuring the tyrant ruling in an ecowas member country ceases to exist as the head of state and allow the president-elect to assume power, so the killings continued despite references being made to Fayose’s approach. The views Nigerians has been divided even to an extent that the President was criticised, he was alleged to have refused to interfere in the Fulani Herdsmen killings based on the fact that he happens to hail from the same tribe, views became divided tribally which also led to that of religion.
Recently Apostle Suleman who happens to oversee Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide presided over a church service and declared war on Fulani Herdsmen, he was quoted talking to his church members:
“I have told them in the church here, that any Fulani herdsman that just entered by mistake, Kill him, Kill Him. Cut his head. If they are busy killing Christians and nothing is happening, we will kill them and nothing will happen”

I actually can’t blame him, if a robber has been terrorising a community and inflicting injuries on them, what do think a man who feels his house might be next will do? He would probably give his household an instruction to kill the robber at the slightest opportunity regardless of whom the robber might be because the situation seems to be that of kill or be killed, the neighbours next to his house would probably pray he succeeds as he would have saved them from a possible tragedy.
Even though the Apostle can’t be blamed for the self-defence, at least he was not asking his congregation to arm themselves and unleash into the streets in search of Fulani Herdsmen to kill, he only gave explicit instructions to kill anyone found within his church premises, but for the size and dominance of Apostle Suleman’s church in Nigeria, has he not for one second had the thought that his church would possibly have a Fulani representation or does he not share the same vision like other men of God that Christianity is for all, if this actually looks the way I had thought about it, then our man of God is probably aiding two wrongs that will never make a right. How will I share a belief in you as a man of God and you declared such war on my tribes men, irrespective of what might have happened, sentiments will surely set in and this would affect the belief the Pastor and I share in the house of God.

The use of words when addressing issues like these should be distinctive enough in order not to trigger an entirely different situation and to also avoid being misquoted, some people shut their eyes to the fact that Christians were being killed, the only fact that pondered in their minds was that a Pastor made statements which contains vulgarity by asking his members to kill any herdsman spotted in his church. I think it would have been better if the pastor had declared war on “Terrorist Herdsmen” rather than “Fulani Herdsmen”, declaring war on a particular tribe whom you share the same county with won’t being solutions to the problem at hand, whereas they have not been officially declared harmful and dangerous by the government.
The main fact is that our minds has been set against each other both politically and religiously for the gain of an unjust minority, we don’t even know why we act in some ways even that actions meant for our defense turns out to become harmful.
