TRAGEDY struck on Tuesday when fire gutted the female hostel of the university of Uyo, destroying property worth millions of naira.

Students, who were affected by the fire outbreak, which occurred at exactly 11.15am, were seen wailing over the loss of their credentials, cash and other personal belongings.

Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident, observed that about 15 rooms the female hostel known as Hall 3B were razed by the inferno.

It was gathered that operatives of the state fire service that came to the scene were unable to put the raging fire out as most of them were seen fiddle with some of the components in their vehicle.

The affected students, however, watched helplessly as their prefabricated hostel got burnt to ashes.

One of the students, who simply identified herself as Uduak, accused the school authorities of negligence, saying they did not respond to the reports written to them about the electrical fault in the female hostel.

Most University hostels are more like death traps nowadays.
Stay there at your own risk. And something has to be done soon.
Heard about some renovation going on in some hostels, maybe this will make them work faster.
