In the .org, the wordpress software is free but you still have to host it with a hosting company. That is what you pay for. Wordpress does not give free domains.

One major downside of using hosted wordpress is that you cannot monetize it outside what is provided by wordpress. For instance, you cannot use third party ad services like adsense and co or put affiliate links.

Just like Blogger.com.

And if you signup, your site will look like : Prettyhard .

Now, there is a another hosting platform coming from wordpress.org.

And you'll only get their service if you buy the hosting online via sites that offer "Wordpress Hosting"

Example : Bluehost offers wordpress hosting.
Bear in mind any wordpress hosting affiliated with a company or web registrar , that wordpress is set to be wordpress.org.
